What Aged Care Services Are Available?

April 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 147

When your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and so on start to get older, you may feel that they are not coping at home as well as they once were. Perhaps their partner (who did most of the work around the house) has passed away, or they have developed illnesses and conditions that restrict them from being able to do many things for themselves. It is at times like these that you may begin to look into what aged care services are available.

· At Home Many people like to retain their sense of independence, even as they grow older and have difficulties completing the most basic of daily tasks (such as bathing and cooking). At home aged care services are available that involve a nurse or social worker of some kind visiting an elderly person on a daily basis and helping them to complete the tasks that they have the most trouble with. These people are also usually trained to administer any medications that the elderly person happens to be taking, allowing for as little disruption in their day as possible.

·With Family When it becomes clear that an elderly person can no longer live by themselves (perhaps they have had one too many falls or caused other accidents around the house), many like to move in with one of the children or another family member who is happy to take them in. This aged care service is one of the cheapest available, as you do not have to pay a nurse or carer because the family is able to do all these things for the elderly person.

·Retirement Villages This aged care service actually involves an elderly person or couple moving into a home that has been situated in a village specifically set aside for retirees and pensioners. This allows the person or couple to have a relatively help-free life (the homes are fully equipped with kitchens, laundries, yards and so on), but they can rest assured with the knowledge that help is close at hand should they ever need it.

·Nursing Homes Finally, when it becomes too difficult for an elderly person to be cared for in their own home or in the home of a family member, they will generally be moved to a nursing or aged care home. These services offer both low level (people who are simply ageing) and high level (people suffering from dementia and other illnesses) accommodation.

As you can see, there is a range of aged care services available, catering to the current needs and preferences of the elderly person in question. Remember, however, that each of these options involves some sort of cost - you will need to ensure that either yourself or the elderly person can afford to pay for these services, but meeting with a financial advisor can help you to work out how to best go about this.
