Electrotherapy 101

April 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 131

One of the earliest forms of medical treatment used by doctors was Electrotherapy. Essentially, the idea behind this therapy was to ultimately reduce the swelling and pain in certain parts of the body. Typically, it is used in situations characterized by great pain due to muscle swelling. After the dawn of modern medicine, this form of therapy was considered somewhat barbaric as it inflicted a bit of pain to the patient.

Thanks to the advancements in technology, scientists and doctors alike have been able to work out the kinks in this form of therapy and fully grasp the side effects. As a result, this form of therapy is considered as a safe and usable method of treatment.

In this form of therapy, an electric current is sent through an affected body tissue or muscle in an attempt to stimulate the area. Keep in mind that the current that is applied can either be a direct current or alternating current, however, in the majority of cases, an alternating current is used as it proves to be more effective.

Now days, this form of therapy is used to provide treatment for people who are suffering from some sort of mental or neurological problem. In addition, this form of therapy is also used to help increase the blood flow and circulation throughout the body in an attempt to heal wounds. This treatment is typically used by chiropractors and physiotherapists.

This type of treatment is known to be very effective in reducing the amount of pain induced by a certain part of the body. For example, patients that suffer from arthritic inflammation prefer this type of treatment as it reduces the number of pain signals to the brain therefore providing temporary relief. The best part is that with this form of treatment, there is no need for any surgery.

Electrotherapy has become a very popular type of treatment because of its unique healing abilities, especially when it comes to muscle repair. A patient does not need to be confined to an operation theatre in order to get this treatment. It can simply be done within the confines of the doctor's office, provided that they have the correct equipment.

Keep in mind that individuals that have a pacemaker or women that are pregnant should never undergo this type of therapy because the electrical signals can cause damage to the pacemaker or unborn child.

There are still advancements being made in this form of treatment so that it becomes more useful and efficient for people that are suffering from muscle and/or tissue damage.
