How to Choose a Good Laptop for Web Designing

March 31, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 186

Computers today are the need of the hour. Isn't it surprising that computers find their way into all fields of your choice? As the era advances, computers and their specifications follow, too. Laptops are replacing the desktops due to their portability, though many web designers still prefer the desktop since they are more comfortable to work with. However it may be difficult to choose the correct configuration while buying a laptop to suit your requirement and hence a study is inevitable. It is great to have a little help/suggestion on how to buy the best one to suit your requirement. This article is written - keeping a web-designer in mind, but is useful for any laptop buyer.

Laptops fall into four main categories: net-books, ultra portables, all-purpose laptops, and desktop replacements. The laptop category that is right for you depends on the kind of user you are and you are the best judge for this. Consider your budget first. Then you should shortlist your requirements after carrying out a proper survey.

Let us consider the computer elements that you should give a thought before actually placing your order.

1) RAM (Random access memory): It denotes the speed with which the memory is accessed. Graphic/ Web designers prefer a minimum of 2GB of RAM (Random access memory) or more.

2) Screen:

a) Size: Screen sizes are measured diagonally like TV screens. Constant game players, designers etc. choose a wider screen for better visual effects. Note that bigger screens increase the volume and weight of the laptop.

b) Type of display: These days LCDs are preferred due to their better quality display.

c) Resolution: It measures the number of dots on the screen. 800x600 (VGA) or 1024x768(Super VGA) are advisable for enough clarity.

3) Central Processing Unit (CPU): One of the main factors in deciding the performance of a computer depends on the brain of the computer, the CPU. It ensures the smooth working of the computer.

4) Hard Disk: This is where the operating system, software programs and other information is stored. A separate hard disk for storage purposes is preferred these days as it allows you to carry it as and when required separately and also helps to have a backup outside your laptop.

5) Pointing Devices: Pointing Devices are inbuilt in the laptops. They are used to point, click and drag items. They are available in the form of sticks, track pads and track balls. It is always advisable to test the pointing devices and the key board (input devices) for comfortable operations. Web Designers may consider buying an external device like a mouse if you are more comfortable with it.

6) Battery: Laptops need charging to work. When the user is always on go and has less charging options, they should opt for an extended battery. Always check on the stand-by time of the batteries (usually between 2.5 hours to 4 hours). The backup of a laptop depends on its cell eg 6 Cell, 8 Cell. Higher the cell, more backup.

7) USB ports: These are required to connect the cameras, speakers, external hard disks, scanners, printers etc. to the laptop. New version of USB is 3.0. It has a better performance than 2.0 USB. It makes you future compatible too.

8) Wi-Fi & Bluetooth: Wi-Fi enables convenience in web surfing from any location without connecting cables. With Bluetooth there are no hassles of inserting a USB cord to transfer pictures/videos between your mobile, printer or any other device.

9) Webcam: The latest laptops have a built-in webcam. However for good quality picture 3 mega pixel camera can be added to your list.

10) Weight of the laptop: An important aspect to be considered while buying a laptop is its weight. Laptops are portable devices and hence their weights must be checked before buying. Generally laptops weigh about 1.5 kg - 3 kg.

So a little bit of home work will help you to get a satisfactory product. Surf the net for more information & reviews and also consult friends from your field. Check for best deals and offers given by the dealers.

Another important point that you should not miss is the warranty period, extended warranties and service contract offered by the company. You may consider buying theft insurance if you are a regular traveler and fear theft or damage in transit. Check on the accessories that the company may be offering complementary. Branded fresh products may sometimes be an expensive deal but they come with a proper replacement guarantee or service contract, but you may hunt for cheaper deals on the net too.

Last but not the least, if you want to add color to your laptop ( an external feature) many companies have now launched laptops with colored bodies. So make a survey and pick up your laptop soon!
