Find a Reason to Smile

April 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 133

I woke up in the morning feeling weird, and generally stressed. I checked on my son at school and he requested for some money to go for a scouts camping event. The cost of the camp was a bit high but I could afford it. That was a reason for me to smile.

I proceeded to the community where as part of my job I had to visit a school. The school has 96 children. There were 3 kindergarten classes and 4 classes for primary. However all these 7 classes studied in two incomplete rooms; one of the rooms was half-roofed. When it rains, which is a common occurrence in the area, the kids cluster into a corner and cover their heads with their little hands. That is the best umbrella they can afford to protect themselves from the rain.

The bare footed children sit on a dusty floor during classes. Only a portion has books to write in. The school staff is composed of only 2 teachers. It is amazing how 2 teachers have to handle children across a section of 7 classes in two rooms! One of the teachers who is also the headmistress of the school cannot read or write! The primary section leaves at 4 p.m. The kids however do not eat or drink anything at school! They survive on an empty stomach.

If these children ever get the chance of reaching primary seven, they will have to sit for the same national exams that my son will sit for. My son goes to school clad in shoes. He never walks to school; he is picked from home and dropped at school by the school bus. He is served tea and something to eat during the two tea breaks at school and is served a complete meal for lunch. He has the privilege of going out on school tours and camps.

Despite the pathetic situation of the school I visited, the kids in this school were not complaining. They were happy to see me and my colleagues when we paid them a visit. They sang songs for us and were happy to receive us despite their circumstances. I was ashamed of my initial complaints and I realized I need to look at the good things I have had the opportunity to have and smile in gratitude. The parents of those kids are not worse sinners than me. How is it with you? Like one song writer said, "count your blessings and name them one by one and it will surprise you what God has done"
