Count Your Blessings and Have More Gratitude In Your Life

April 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 82

We all go through our daily tasks with such speed and determination that sometimes we look back and realize we are not stopping to enjoy those wonderful little things that make life worth living. You realize you've been so busy being busy that you didn't stop to smell the roses.

What's you may not realize is that embracing gratitude is a critical component of your health and well-being. There is scientific evidence that gratitude produces health benefits.

The research is summarized in Robert Emmons' new book Thanks!: How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier (Houghton Mifflin, 2007). Emmons and his colleagues at the University of California at Davis are among the pioneers in research on gratitude, part of a larger movement called positive psychology. Positive psychology, instead of focusing on illness and emotional problems, studies health-promoting behavior and the pleasurable parts of life.

How do we make those changes that will allow us to enjoy our life more... to go through each day with more gratitude and joy? We can't add hours in the day, but we can control how we approach each hour. To borrow from the recently departed Michael Jackson's popular song, it starts with The Man In the Mirror - "If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change."

Here are some suggestions for approaching each day so you can experience more gratitude and joy:

First, start your day with the goal of performing one random act of kindness. It could be for one of your loved ones, a friend or you might be inspired in the moment to help a stranger. Keep your mind open to the possibilities. You could help an elderly woman get a box of laundry detergent off the shelf and into her cart at the grocery store. You could put a note that says "I'm thinking about you" in your daughter's lunch box. You could tell your best friend how much you appreciate her friendship. Kindness is contagious and it gets noticed and your act will set off a series of other acts of kindness in turn.

Dr. Masaru Emoto, a visionary researcher and doctor of Alternative Medicine from Japan, performed research that provides physical evidence of the power of gratitude and love. His research proves that slang and harmful words are destructive and certain word combinations are powerful and positive. For example, "There is a special combination that seems to be perfect for [cleaning up the natural waters of the world], which is love plus the combination of thanks and appreciation reflected in the English word gratitude. Just one of these is not enough. Love needs to be based in gratitude, and gratitude needs to be based in love. These two words together create the most important vibration."

The point I'd like to make is you should go through each day and choose your words carefully. Choose words of kindness, gratitude, love and joy and not only will you feel the vibrational energy of those words, the person you are directing them to will feel them as well. And don't forget to choose your internal talk words carefully as well. We are typically our own worst critics and we tend to beat ourselves down with our own internal talk. Make a concerted effort to change the tone of the things you say to yourself, to be less critical of yourself and others.

At the end of each day, reflect on your experience from the day and look for at least three things you are grateful for. Say a prayer of thanks for that blessing in your day. You could also keep a journal so you have a written record of all the things you are grateful for and blessed with. And you can take this a step further by keeping a visual collection of everything you are grateful for. You could do this with a cork board and include pictures of your family and friends to start. Soon it will be so full you can't help be overflowing with gratitude and joy.

Count your blessings and you'll have more gratitude in your life. Remember that you are special and unique and you are deserving of God's pure and unconditional love.
