What Is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow is a common injury causing discomfort and pain on the outer part of the elbow. It is an excessive use injury resulting in the outer part of a the elbow area.

It is a discomfort of the tendons that connects the forearm tendons on the outside of the elbow. The forearm layers and muscular tissue become damaged from excessive use, doing exactly the same movements recurrently. This causes suffering and soreness on the outside part of the elbow.

The name may tell you that somebody can only get this trauma while playing tennis. But in real life studies show that only 5% of tennis elbow cases play tennis. This elbow injury has a tendency to be caused by extended gripping movement, so other names for this injury are also shooter's elbow and archer's elbow. This problem can not be compared to golfer's elbow, which is a painfulness on the inside of the elbow!

The causes

We use the forearm muscle group to straighten and lift our hands and wrists. Research have proven that 50% of the injuries are a result of trauma such as direct hits to the epicondyle, a fast pull, or aggressive extension. So repeated contraction of the forearm muscle group and stress to the tissue may result into tennis elbow.

As the title suggests, playing tennis - especially persistent use of the backhand action is one potential cause of tennis elbow. Although, a few other sports players suffer from tennis elbow over time. That's because there are many other actions that may play a role when getting tennis elbow, such as lack of power, lack of technique, extended duration or intensity of play. Particularly in the following sports you could be faced with this elbow injury:

  • Playing baseball
  • Bowling
  • Discus throwing
  • Playing a sport with a racket
  • Golfing
  • Fencing
  • Water polo
  • Swimming

There's also a range of other activities and careers that will affect your chance of suffering from this injury.

  • People who work at a desk: the use of a computer mouse and keyboard demands lots of fine, repeating movements of the wrist and hand
  • Cleaning:mopping the floor, wringing a cloth and vacuuming are activities that need constant motion of the arm
  • Hairdressers: using a pair of scissors and a hairdryer need small movements of the wrist and hand
  • Plumbers, handyman and builders: manual labour such as working with plumbing tools, hammers and screwdrivers, laying bricks includes recurring turning or lifting of the arm
  • Painting
  • Gardening

Tennis elbow is a common condition that generally affects adults and only 5% actually play tennis. People in the age group of 35 to 60 are at the highest risk.
