Have you ever heard of the carpal tunnel syndrome? It is a condition wherein your hands experience pain and numbness. This condition normally affects the thumb negatively and it may be the most troublesome to deal during bedtime. It happens when the pressure becomes high in the carpal tunnel, the part of the hands that can be found in the wrist.

How does the carpal syndrome happen? This condition happens when the nerve at the wrist is being pressed. This increases the pressure in the carpal tunnel which in turn causes pain and discomfort to the different parts of the hands and fingers. The nerve that is being affected here is the median nerve. This is the nerve located in the forearm and runs until the palm. When the nerve is interrupted and is experiencing high pressure in the wrist due to pressing or squeezing, that is where all the pain and weakness comes from.

There are several symptoms that can indicate if you have carpal syndrome or not. The symptoms are usually not that bad at first. Simple tingling and slight numbness are the initial characterizations. After some time, the fingers start to swell and become weak. For some people, they also experience difficulty in holding objects of bending their wrists. If the condition is chronic, then it can also affect the sensory nerves in the hands and it may be difficult for people to differentiate the hot things from cold objects.

Any adult can develop carpal tunnel syndrome but it is most evident in women. It is said that only one man in every 3 women experiences this condition. It usually starts from the dominant hand and later on spreads to the other hand. According to some researches, people who are experiencing some metabolic problems are also prone to developing this condition.

There are also certain jobs that may increase the risk of having carpal tunnel syndrome. For instance, people who are working in production and manufacturing companies are very vulnerable to this disease. These are the people who do jobs related to sewing, cleaning and packing almost every day. It is also common for people who are always in front of their computers and typing. This is because the wrists are often being bent and twisted in these kinds of professions.

The carpal tunnel syndrome may not seem to be as serious as it looks but it can lead to serious damage if left unattended. The median nerve can be affected severely and can lead to permanent damage. As soon as it is diagnosed, every patient must request for treatment from the trusted physicians. This condition can normally be treated with certain drugs such as pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs. It can also be relieved by certain exercises for the upper body such as stretching. For severe cases, the doctor may recommend having a surgery. This is especially true for people who have been experiencing the carpal tunnel syndrome for more than half a year already. The surgical procedure can either be open release surgery or endoscopic surgery.
