Improving Carpal Tunnel

May 03, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 183

If you suspect you have carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), there are many different ways you can handle treating it. From ignoring it to seeking surgical relief, you have limitless options on ways to improve your CTS. However, some of these methods are less than ideal and may cause more harm than good in the long run. Learn more about the different ways to handle your carpal tunnel to decide what is best for you.

Do Nothing

Many people wrongly assume that if they do nothing about their carpal tunnel that eventually, their bodies will adapt to it. Unfortunately, this is just not the case. If you are showing signs of CTS, you need to see a doctor and prevent yourself from causing further damage. Many factors could be at play in causing your carpal tunnel: your workspace could be poorly positioned, your posture could be off, you could be naturally predisposed to swelling in your extremities, and so many more possibilities. Ultimately, it's important to do something, especially see a doctor, to make sure you don't aggravate your problem more.

Massage and Acupuncture

Depending on the severity of your CTS, you may find relief from massage or acupuncture. Usually relief is temporary with these methods, and frequent treatments are required to see results. However, many patients with mild to moderate carpal tunnel flare ups find these therapies to be very helpful, so they should not be ruled out.

There are lots of exercises you can do to improve your carpal tunnel syndrome. These are generally focused on strengthening your wrists, but they can also focus on your overall posture, which can greatly reduce your likelihood of getting CTS. It is best to seek the assistance of a physical therapist if you want to use exercises to help ease your suffering; though many resources are available online, a physical therapist can show you the correct way to work with your body to heal it, which is something the internet simply cannot do.

Wrist Braces

Wrist braces can help to keep your wrists stable and give them a chance to heal while you sleep. Some CTS patients find that using a wrist brace lessens their symptoms or keeps symptoms from worsening. Depending on the level of care you need, you may be able to get wrist braces from your local pharmacy or you may need to have your orthopedist or physical therapist provide or recommend some.

Visit an Orthopedist

If your CTS is severe enough to affect your everyday life, you need to seek professional care. Ultimately, the best relief you will find for carpal tunnel is through visiting an orthopedist. Orthopedic specialists are experts in how your muscles and bones work together, and they can determine if you are just suffering from CTS or if you have more than one condition affecting your hands and wrist. Once the cause of your discomfort is determined, your orthopedist will offer you a treatment plan which may include a range of healing techniques from physical therapy to chiropractics to even surgery in severe cases. By working with your body to heal you, your orthopedic specialist will help you to achieve lasting results that will give you lasting relief.
