How People Deal With Whiplash

February 20, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 158

People often deal with whiplash by treating the symptoms only and don't address the underlying cause of the problem. You may have heard of a similar situation to the following. A person is stopped at a stop sign and a car suddenly hits them from behind. The hit is unexpected because the person did not see the other car coming. The person feels a sudden jolt in their neck and then the pain goes away. The person gets out of their car to check for damage but sees that there is not much damage to either car. The person dismisses the situation thinking it is nothing to worry about.

A couple hours later, the person notices that their neck feels stiff and has difficulty turning their head when they are doing a shoulder check to see if there is oncoming traffic. The person also feels a sharp pain whenever he or she turns their head. The person wakes up the next day feeling worse than they did the day before. The person has more stiffness in the neck and can hardly turn the head at all. They have a severe headache that won't go away.

The person decides to visit their family doctor to help with the problem. The doctor prescribes pain medication and muscle relaxers. This helps with the pain a little, but the person continues to have problems and is concerned that they need to do something else. The person hears from a friend that they should try seeing a chiropractor.

The person is surprised when they get to the chiropractor's office. The chiropractic physician seems to be very knowledgeable about what is going on. The doctor takes X-rays and goes over them in detail with the person. The chiropractor explains that the speed of the force of the impact can move the spine and head faster than the muscles could tighten up to brace the impact. They learn that there are misaligned spinal bones that are irritating nerves and tightening up muscles.

The chiropractor performs specific hands on adjustments to the spine to help correct the misaligned bones and remove the nerve interference. The chiropractor teaches special exercises and stretches to help and explains how to properly ice to minimize inflammation. The person feels immediate improvement and notices that they can turn their head much better. They no longer have the sharp pain that they felt before. They are happy that their friend recommended a chiropractor.

The situation explained in this article represents many real experiences that drivers have every day. People that don't address the problem early on and only mask the symptoms with medication often have long, drawn out problems that result in chronic pain and loss of work. Chiropractic is an effective treatment option that not only helps with the symptoms, but can effectively correct the underlying cause of the problem.
