Early Treatment of Carpal Tunnel

April 11, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 155

One of the largest misconceptions about carpal tunnel is that individuals who type or write for a living are the most frequent victims of this syndrome. Frankly, the swelling and alignment of the nerve found within the central canal of the hand known as the carpal tunnel is the issue. So whether someone types, works with wrist demanding power tools, or is just predisposed there are warning signs that your hand movement is in danger of being compromised by this ailment. The longer the condition goes untreated the more damage that can be done to the nerve that not only services the hand but also the arm.

With any persisting aches, pains, or numbness you are advised to seek medical attention, but before you run to the doctor screaming my hand hurts or my wrist aches; it is important to have a pattern of ailment to support your diagnosis and treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome. You don't have to wait too long to know that something is not right. A much of the symptoms occurs in index finger, middle or ring finger typically with the thumb. It is typically flared up during use of the hand in a tight pinching or gripping motion such as holding the steering wheel for extended time or a book or telephone. Some of the early symptoms include tingling and numbness that can even occur when you wake up because of how your wrist was flexed as you slept. As the condition worsens numbness can persist and pains radiate throughout the hand and wrist and can move up the arm. And after a significant amount of damage from swelling, numbness and pain you can actually experience weakness in trying to perform the same tasks of holding on to items, operating machinery, gripping your steering wheel and opening various objects. Frankly, you may experience these symptoms on and off throughout a particularly physical task and that doesn't mean that they will continue or return. But you have a better chance of avoiding long term nerve and muscle damage if you see a doctor sooner rather than later when you've experienced several consistent symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Early solutions can reverse some of the loss and prevent further damage at the same time. You may be advised to let the affected hand and wrist to rest for two to six weeks in splints. Corticosteroid injections provide temporary relief during this time of rest as well. Second, one of the most used, early treatment methods is physical therapy. A stretching and strengthening of the upper body will help circulation and relaxation.

Ultrasound and anti-inflammatory drugs, ice, warmth and laser therapy are also applied at early stages in order to avoid surgeries that create the space for the inflamed nerve. Carpal tunnel doesn't have to rob you of hand and wrist function and infuse your life with pain, if you take early preventive steps with medical advisement, you should be able to overcome this syndrome and get back to life.
