De Quervains Tendonitis Is Thumb Tendonitis

March 09, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 147

Many people become very worried when their doctor diagnoses the pain in their thumb area as De Quervain's Syndrome. The name sounds official and scary, like a disease. They walked in with thumb pain and now fear they have some kind of pain causing disease! Thankfully for all of us, such is not the case.

The issue is called De Quervains Syndrome because it was Dr. De Quervain that named a particular pain situation after himself. He saw patients that had painful thumb situations, and as doctors like to do, he isolated out that specific set of factors as it's own individual, isolated, specific disorder.

The bad news is, it can be very painful, even debilitating.

The good news is, it's JUST thumb tendonitis. That's all. It's tendonitis. There's nothing special about it. De Quervain's is just a fancy name for 'Thumb Tendonitis'.

Wrist tendonitis, achilles tendonitis, tennis elbow, de Quervain's's all the same. It's tendonitis. The fact that it's tendonitis of the thumb doesn't make it special or unique. It's just tendonitis.

What Causes?

Like all tendonitis, De Quervain's shows up after years of repetitive motion activities. You may be fine one day and in pain the next, but there was a progressive mechanism of tightness and pain happening long before you ever felt pain.

Repetitive motion is not really the cause of De Quervain's. The real cause of De Quervains is the Pain Causing Dynamic. The Pain Causing Dynamic is a function of increasing muscle tightness, increasing connective tissue tightness, increased inflammation process, nervous system getting increasingly concerned, and increasing nutritional insufficiency.

What Are The Symptoms?

Pain in the forearm. Pain in the thumb joints. Pain in the tendon that connects forearm muscle to thumb.

Pain can be in the form of: sharp pain, dull pain, constant or variable pain, ache, spasm, cramp.

The worse pain becomes the more likely that it's turning into Tenosynovitis (extremely painful irritation of the thumb tendon and tendon sheath).

Numbness and tingling are not officially part of De Quervain's syndrome, though it can certainly be present.

Loss of strength: the tighter a muscle is, and the longer it's tight, the less able it is to perform work, thus it has less strength potential. Inability to grip a cup does not necessarily equal injury. But it does equal an acute pain dynamic.

What Do I Do To Get Rid Of?

You treat it like you treat any other form of Tendonitis. You make muscles less tight. You open up constrictive connective tissue. You get rid of the inflammation, or said another way, you dial down the inflammation process. You make sure you have all the necessary nutrition for your body to work properly (muscle function, anti-inflammation, etc.)

De Quervain's is totally reversible. It's just a matter of using the RIGHT methods to make it go away.
