You may have sat at the computer and noticed tingling or numbness in your hand. After experiencing this for several days, you may notice a sharp, piercing pain in the wrist that shoots up into your arm. This is a common experience for many that suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome or CTS is a condition that can get progressively worse over time. The symptoms are caused from pressure on a nerve in the wrist.

CTS is a condition that is a result of irritation of the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel. The median nerve controls sensation to the palmar side of the hand and thumb. It also controls muscles in the hand which allow the fingers and thumb to move. The tunnel is located in the wrist. It is made up of ligaments and bones in the wrist. The median nerve and tendons pass through this tunnel.

Pressure on the median nerve in the wrist can cause symptoms such as tingling, numbness or itching in the hand. Symptoms of CTS are commonly felt in the thumb, index and middle fingers. The symptoms often come on at night because people tend to sleep with their wrists in flexion. CTS can also result in decreased grip strength and make it difficult to pick up small objects.

Activities that require high force, repeated movements or vibration can result in CTS. Specific activities like driving, knitting, performing a musical instrument and working on an assembly line are commonly associated with carpal tunnel syndrome.

There are things you can do to effectively prevent carpal tunnel syndrome. Eating properly and exercising to avoid weight gain may help prevent CTS. It is also important to maintain a proper blood sugar level to avoid diabetes. Diabetes is known to exacerbate the symptoms associated with the disease. Nerve glide exercises can help to reduce inflammation and pressure on the median nerve.

If your symptoms persist, you may need treatment from a health care professional. There are various treatments available for CTS. Some are more invasive than others. Chiropractic is an effective treatment method to treat and prevent carpal tunnel syndrome. Chiropractors perform specific adjustments of the bones in the carpal tunnel to help remove pressure off of the median nerve. Many people report a reduction of pain and symptoms associated with carpal tunnel syndrome following chiropractic treatment. Many prefer chiropractic because it is non-invasive and doesn't require a shot or surgery.
