Waste Not, Want Not! Recycle Scented Candles and Save!

April 07, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 121

We all love walking into a room and enjoying the scent of the fabulously presented candles we buy each month. Some brands are better than others in terms of their scent and burning times, so how do we get the best value for our money?

For me, the most disappointing factor is cheap wicks that burn down quickly. How many times have you bought a scented candle only to find that the wick burns out before the wax has melted? When this happens I feel hard done by and usually let the jar of wax sit on the mantelpiece, hoping that it will magically grow another wick and be useful again.

One day, as I looked impatiently at the candle, I admitted defeat and went to get my oil burner hoping that, and some essential oils, would deliver the smell I was missing. Then it struck me! I scooped out the remains of the candle wax and put the chunks into the top of the oil burner. Amazingly, the little tea-light candle that cost a couple of pence was melting the candle wax and filling the room with the gorgeous fragrance once more. It also did this much more quickly than the 2 hours minimum burn time that candle manufacturers recommend for candles to reach the optimum fragrance.

All you need to extend the life of your scented candles are:

  • The remains of your old scented candle that has become hard wax again
  • A tea spoon to scoop the wax out of the jar
  • A tea-light candle
  • An oil burner that you would normally burn essential oils, or aromatherapy oils in.

This is standard practice in our family now. We treat ourselves to the more pricey scented candles knowing that we will have full value out of every inch of wax available.

You can re-heat one oil burner full of wax for about 10 hours before you realistically need to scoop that wax out of the oil burner and throw it away. Please do this when it is cold. You then simply add a few new scoops of wax to the burner and enjoy the results.

Gaining an extra 20-30 hours of scent from your candle is worth the few minutes it takes to do.

Happy Days!

* We do not recommend that you touch any melted wax as you may suffer burns.

* Please remember that all oil burners and candles should not be left unattended for any amount of time. A naked flame may cause a house fire.
