The Immense Power Of The Wind

April 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 161

The United States are known for many things (mainly fast-food and The Oscars), however an incredible potential for clean and renewable energy, is usually not on top of the list. But it's true; In a recent report issued by the U.S. Department of Energy, a specific figure stood out quite drastically: Experts concluded that with proper long term investment and organization, the States could generate FOUR TIMES its energy needs by simply putting off-shore wind farms into place.

This may sound like a but a wet dream for many green activists, but the stones have started rolling. According to the lengthy report, 20% of the country's electricity needs could be met by wind power farms by 2030, which would in turn help to create nearly 45,000 new jobs in a number of trades. Now, that is nearly eighteen years away, and one may wonder what is taking the Government so long to make the switch from the outdated and outperformed coal, gas and nuclear power sources..

The main reason in this case, (as it is so often in this world) is money. The production cost of offshore wind power, albeit being a lot more efficient than land based farms, due to the high seas usually being quite stormy, cost nearly twice as much as their counterparts on the main land. This is because it takes a tremendous amount of effort to move and erect the wind towers out in the ocean. Add to that the high and regular repair costs, that one has to pay in order for the farms to run smoothly, and you got a problem finding investors willing to chip in a little more in order for a far more green future.

Another problem is a public opposition of people living near the coast. Many of them say, that the erection of offshore wind farms would harm not only their view of the bay, but also have quite a negative impact on wildlife and tourism. While these points are understandable in a way, it does mean, that more fossil and nuclear fuels need to be used to compensate for the lack of clean wind energy that could be made available simply by building a few wind turbine towers.

If you were to put aside monetary and public concerns and simply looked at the statistics, I think it is quite obvious that investing in wind power, whether on- or offshore, is the smartest thing this country could currently do. It would reduce both air pollution and fossil fuel usage, as well as helping the economy through the creation of thousands and thousands of jobs. We are slowly getting there, but lots still has to be done on the path to a green future, and all of us can help make a positive change for our Earth.
