Solar Power Can Juice Up Your Lawn

April 09, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 171

Space-age technology is now making it possible to make your lawn and garden a much more interesting place. New solar powered products operate without the need for running long extension cords out to them or hiring an electrician to hardwire them.

We've all seen the solar powered driveway or perimeter marker lamps. They are inexpensive and very easy to install. But the first set of these lights that I ever bought had to be hard wired into the house electrical system. After days of digging trenches for the conduit and wiring them properly, I had nice looking electrical lights lining my driveway. But the bulbs had to be changed frequently, and they didn't turn off automatically. The solar lamps win hands down.

I think the most innovative use in solar powered garden decor is the solar fountain. You can place these fountains anywhere without any plumbing or electricity. Simply fill the fountain with a preset amount of water and the sun will provide the power for the pump. As the sun goes down, the fountain will slow down and eventually stop because the power from the sun is being used to operate the pump instead of charging a battery, as for a lantern. Many of these pumps have an AC cord for operating at night.

Dark spots far from your door can now be illuminated with a variety of solar powered lanterns. Wall lanterns, cheerful little animals, moody Moroccan lanterns and even garden stones can be placed anywhere the sun shines. Most of these lights will stay lit for 6 to 8 hours after dark, more than enough time for summer time entertaining. So, if the lights are not on when you get up the next morning, no worries- the solar batteries are already recharging for that evening.

The hot new item this year is the fluttering butterfly. These are very eye-catching and seem to attract birds and more butterflies., so keep that in mind when placing them in your yard. I think they look great in a flower bed. With these and all other solar powered lamps and whirlygig-type items, the more sun they get during the day, the longer they will operate at night.

So before you start digging up your yard to install lighting or fountains, consider using the solar option. It's much easier and cheaper than buying ugly extension cords or hiring an electrician after you've given up on the project.
