Simple and Important Soil Remediation Techniques

June 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 179

Despite the fact that many are not quite conversant with soil remediation as a process of purifying and revitalizing the topsoil; it is vital in the environment in regards to restoring healthy and productive usage of land. In landscaping, the term soil remediation collectively refers to various procedures used in the purification and renewal of the soil. Think use of compost, minerals and balancing of pH levels in the soil.

While the aforementioned procedures are considered imperative in regards to making the soil healthy; soil remediation techniques however need to be done prior to landscaping or tilling the land. This helps in the removal of polluted or contaminated elements in the soil. Soil vapor extraction, excavation, soil stabilization, chemical oxidation are some of the soil remediation techniques that will be covered herein.

Premier technique is excavation. When it comes to the removal of contaminated soil, excavation takes the Oscar home as the best, if not the simplest form of soil remediation technique. While other methods are considered not feasible - since time immemorial - excavation has been widely regarded useful as it addresses immediate risk to human health. Suffice it to say, excavation is safe and can be practiced by all and sundry as a soil remediation technique. It restores the topsoil.

Secondly, topsoil vapor and extraction. Not only does it purify the air, restore and repair the eco-system in general, but soil vapor and extraction remediation technique draws off significant amounts of volatile constituents in contaminated soils. This simple technique uses a vacuum that drill wells near the contaminated area in question, later sucking significant amounts of volatile elements in the soil prior to realizing them into the atmosphere. It also referred to as soil venting and vacuum extraction.

Soil stabilization is another vital soil remediation technique. Unlike the aforementioned, this technique uses chemical reagents and it takes time to see its effects. What this technique does is to physically encapsulate volatile elements in the soil by reducing their mobility. This is made possible by the fact that soil stabilization technique creates a chemically stable material within the soil. Read lime. To effectively solidify contaminants in the topsoil, lime is used as a reagent.

Lastly, use of chemical oxidation and pump-and-treat remediation techniques. These are two different soil remediation techniques that cannot be overlooked. The former - by injecting oxidants in the soil - effectively converts contaminated elements into harmless, naturally occurring compounds. While the latter, which is self descriptive, consists wholly of pumping contaminated water out of the ground and later treating it.
