Renewable Energy For The Home - Solar Wind Geothermal

April 09, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 123

Renewable energy for the home has grown dramatically in popularity due to the rising costs of utilities around the world, along with our awareness of environmentally friendly living.

Solar, wind and geothermal energy resources can all be utilized by almost anyone anywhere in the world, however before any of these resources can be implemented and benefited from, a certain level of understanding and knowledge must be attained.

Aside from the obvious technical knowledge and understanding, things such as building code regulations for your local area must be adhered to. For example, when considering the installation of a power generating wind turbine, issues such as allowable height of structures and distance from property boundaries will all have different rulings depending on your local government.

Understanding the 'jargon' associated with these systems is also important, so that when you are sourcing components and talking to tradesmen etc, you truly understand what is being said and are able to make informed decisions.

Being able to calculate the power your property uses on a daily basis is imperative, and to do this you will need an understanding of amps, watts & voltage and how they all relate to each other. With this knowledge you can then read the specifications of your appliances and make the necessary calculations. The more accurate you can be with this calculation the more effective your system will be, and the less likely you will be to overspend on your system. For example, when calculating the power usage of your refrigerator it is important to consider that it only runs for approximately one third of the time it is turned on. Likewise, washing machines and dryers may only be used once a day or a few times a week and this needs to be considered when calculating their energy needs.

Storing energy for night times can easily be done using batteries, but did you know that battery life is dramatically extended if they do not discharge beyond 50% of their capacity. As such it may be economically wise to invest in twice the battery capacity than your calculations suggest you need so as to save on future costs of replacement.

Inverters, the component that converts the power from your system into useable power for your home, i.e. 120v or 240v depending on what country you live in, are available in various configurations to suit your needs. A 12volt input can be converted to 120 or 240v output, as can a 24volt input from your system. It is simply a matter of choosing the right inverter for your system and your needs.

The length of cabling required to connect your components will impact the amount of resistance in your system. Basically, the longer the cabling has to be, the higher the quality of the wire required, and with the right knowledge you can easily determine the requirements for your system.
