Gutters Are Important Too!

Gutters are important too!

Not everyone thinks that gutters are important. The water runs off, away it goes and everything is good. Now if you start adding in some wind, uneven grounds or the wrong kind of ground, the equation could get fairly brutal, or messy.

Here on the island we have perimeter drain, not every where has it, or needs it. But we get a lot of rain, so we flush it away from our buildings as fast as possible, under ground.

the buildings that have never had proper eaves trough, are now falling apart.

The lack of an eaves trough system or not properly working gutters can ruin your house with mold, mildew, and rot. But that's just the beginning of damage that can occur. Extra water can become a big issue for some people and there buildings. Whether it's a house, garage, or shed.

If the ground gets to wet around your forms for your house it can start to move slightly, crack and settle in areas where it was not suppose to settle, or move to. As well water always runs to a dry area, this very well could mean your basement or even worse.

Extra water can mean extra bugs as well... and that's not something we need now is it!... not in our buildings its not!

The cost of a gutter system is actually very minimal in comparison to the repairs of a building without gutters. Repairs could be structure issues, rot on the fascia boards and siding. Water can leak into your house from the soffit depending on the roof over hang and where the j-trim sits on the fascia board or sub fascia. It then runs around and in to the soffit, or along the trusses, and may continue its way around.

Water will sometimes stay on the in-between of walls, so there is no visible water on the outside or inside of your house, but the wood and walls are soaked or full of dry rot on the inside... Wet wood is a breading ground for carpenter ants, and they don't come in small amounts either!

They will also eat your extrerior wood, or floors and basements. Water runs to dry, and carpenter ants are right behind! None the less, if you have water in-between your walls, a persons gotta stop and think that there is electrical in there, and that's never a good situation.

I personally have gutters on all my buildings, including my garden shed.

The benefits to having gutters are greater than the cost of the first initial installation. However a proper working gutter system is equaly important, but that's another day, another blog post!

With a proper working gutter system you can save your house a lot of damage, cost factor down the road, and to me, I think the house looks complete.

In some places such as the west coast of Canada, when a person decides they are going to build a house, that's all fine and dandy they start building, but the tricky part is, you cant actually get your occupancy, and sometimes no house insurance without a gutter system. But hey, we also allow for our walls to breath, by code! It's called rain screen.

But then theres always saving water!! You can water your flowers, grass, fill your pond, all kinds of things you can do with spare water. Or if you have some extra money or the know how to do things your self, it's a huge benefit to install a water cistern pump and holding tank. Specially if you live in an area that is fairly dry. Because then during the summer months if there is water restrictions, you have back up water. But really, even here in the "rain forest" where everything is green year round, we too have water restrictions during the summer in the cities and some small towns.

Remember you cant live without clean water, so saving it, is an excellent plan or idea. Some areas even offer special government rewards on taxes for water saving buildings and renovations. it's a huge step in the green path for sure.

In fact I feel so strongly about saving water and how important water really is I have to mention this. I think its important to tell people who read or look to me for information.

One of my favorite documentaries is about "Blue Gold" I highly recommend watching it. The first line in the movie is "This isn't a documentary about water, this is a documentary about humans saving ourselves" Very interesting. Its about a war on water in years to come like we have wars about oil now. Check it out here on you tube

Back to gutters or... eaves trough!

They are important, because they complete your house, save your home from water damage, you can save and use to your benefit in the garden, and they can look nice too! How about some copper half round European style, silver salderd jewellery for your home!

The Gutters/ Eaves troughs line the roofing of your home along the fascia board. Not gable boards (A gable wall looks like /\, a fascia board looks like /_____\) J.

A wide variety of colours, shapes, sizes, and materials are available to furnish your house with the system that works for you! The profiles I recommend are 5" k-style, 6" k-style, and 6" or 8" half round. The material is up to you to decide!
