Grand Parenting: Praise Is Another Key Ingredient

May 01, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 120

Praise is something that is so important to any child, young adult, adults, and elderly as well but, it often time goes by with people not giving such an easy gift. Extolling your grandchild's efforts when they have done something/anything well means so much to them and takes so little effort from you. All you need to do is look back upon your life and try to remember the times that you excelled at something and received the praise from your parents, friends, boss, spouse, or others. It felt pretty good, didn't it? Your grandchildren vie for your attention through most of the things they do and finding ways to tell them what they are doing is good means a great deal to them and makes them want to be as good or better in the other things they do. Using manners, following direction, drawing a picture, getting good grades, participating in a play or sporting event, or cleaning up behind themselves are all things that you can praise your grandchildren for. Believe me; it matters to them to hear your approval.

One of the biggest smiles I have seen from my young granddaughter was when she recently decided to go and sit on the toilet for the first time. When we began telling her how good she was for doing it and praising her efforts, she wore an ear to ear smile for the next several hours and started asking if we wanted her to go sit on the toilet again. Obviously, "potty" training is a milestone for most parents and with the proper encouragement and praise, it can happen sooner than later and give your child/grandchild a sense of accomplishment It also will make you feel good when you see the confidence that comes from your grandchild after you have praised them for something they did. Having said that, I did NOT get the same response from my wife when, trying to be humorous, I began praising HER when she was exiting the bathroom a few minutes later. Praise for your grandchildren's daily efforts does not cost you a thing. Just a few moments with a warm smile and a few good words about what they have done will mean a great deal to them and make them always want to come and tell you about the things they do in their lives. Oh, by the way, don't hold back the children as they praise for your still love to hear that you think they are doing good as well.
