GPS Trackers And How To Use Them To Your Best Advantage

April 20, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 209

As GPS tracking and satnav devices become a more commonplace feature of our daily lives there are a few things you can look into or take note of when travelling or using a tracking system on your journey.

Check Before setting out, prepare and make sure your system has the right destination. Remember, there is more than one Newport in the country, are you travelling to the right one. Is the battery fully charged? You don't want to find yourself in the middle of nowhere without a map or GPS to hand.

Clear line of sight Unobstructed view and signal strength can be important factors in getting the best out of your tracker. When using hand held GPS trackers or Satnav systems they will always need a clear line of sight to get a signal from the satellites to identify your location. GPS systems do not work the best, and often not at all when in a subway, an underground car park or travelling on the tube.

Weather can also have an effect on results produced by GPS tracking devices, cloudy, grey wet days are not going to give as good a service as the one you'd expect on a clear sunny day.

Mapping choice Your choice of mapping software is probably just as important as the GPS system you used. Free online systems like Google Maps are okay for pinpointing where you are and giving your location but are not the best software choice for real time tracking of your movements.

Map accuracy is another factor when considering using GPS, there are many horror stories of people ending up on top of dangerous cliffs or stuck on single lane dirt tracks by out of date maps. It is worth checking how recent the maps are so that your system is giving you accurate, up to date information and not leading you down a dead-end alley.

Use commonsense It may be a logical suggestion but chat forums are full of stories of people listening to their Satnav hysterically shouting that they are about to plunge into a river, only to realise it's a brand new bridge of which the programme is not aware. Or the person who wanted to avoid motorway driving and was taken on a 1,000 mile detour, north of Glasgow so as the miss the M6.

If you find yourself driving down a farm track on a standard trip between two cities, chances are the system is confused. Many people make the mistake of believing GPS systems are infallible, however it is more a case of them misinterpreting bad information. Should there be any doubt, check.
