Learn How to Reduce Your Golfing Handicap Rapidly

February 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 145

In order to get better at golf there are various key factors you have to pay attention to. Developing a reliable swing is very important but many beginners spend too much time working on their full swing and ignore the short game. This is a mistake if your goal is to become a lower handicap player. You should instead try to learn the game backwards from the green back to the tee.

How to putt well:

Putting is obviously a key part of the game of golf and the good news is that almost anyone can learn to become a great putter as it only requires minimal physical talent whereas not everyone has the physical ability to swing a club with enough club head speed to hit the ball 300 yards. There are several putting techniques out there to choose from so watch the pros on tv or take a lesson from a local teaching pro who can show you a good putting technique to start with and then make a decision to stick with it. Constantly changing putting techniques is an almost certain way to develop the putting yips since you never give yourself a chance to master one approach.

It is important to understand that even the best players hit bad putts and miss easy ones every now and then. The best putters learn whatever they can quickly from their mistakes and move on. They do not dwell on their mistakes and they certainly do not completely change their mechanics or even switch to a new magical putter that will give them a perfect stroke every time. There is no such thing as a perfect stroke, instead concentrate on learning a particular technique well and sticking with it long enough to master it well as that is what will lead to consistent putting.

Reading greens well is an important part of being a good putter and one tip to remember about reading greens is to make sure to trust your first impression and never hit a putt if you have doubts about the read you just made. If you start losing confidence in the read you just made when you step up to the ball it is important to simply back away and get your confidence back before you execute the shot. Be sure to crouch and see the putt from various angles as this will give you a good first impression and do not rush as there is no clock in this game, of course you do not want to be too slow either so find the right balance in the amount of time you take. After the last look at the target make sure to keep your mind sharply focused on that target and simply let go trusting that you will be able to make an accurate stroke and hit the ball the right distance. Learning to think selectively is another key trait that all good putters have in common so it is important to remember the best putts you have hit and forget the bad ones as this will make you more confident.
