Explanation of Golf Holes

February 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 149

If you are just taking up the game of golf you might be a little intimidated by the vast vocabulary you have to learn in order to speak the language of the game. This sport is tough enough to learn how to play, so we want to make sure you don't worry about learning how to talk the talk.

With today's article we are going to discuss holes. This is more than just a hole in the ground, it also refers to the individual parts of the course. Let's get to it.

Number of Holes

A golf course is made up of 9 or 18 holes. Most golf courses always have at least 18 holes divided into a front nine and a back nine. The first nine holes are called the front nine and the second nine holes are called the back nine. This is done this way so that the players can take a short break between the front nine and the back nine. The ninth and eighteenth holes commonly end close to the club house with the first tee and the 10th tee nearby.

Each golf hole has a tee sign telling the golfer what distance it is to the hole from each tee box. Most courses have the par of each hole on the sign, as well as the picture of the hole to know the layout of that particular hole. You can therefore see whether the hole doglegs to the left or right, what hazards are located along the length of the hole, where the sand bunkers are located and many other design features that will help you decide what course to take to get to the green.

Kinds of Holes

The most common pars you will find are three, four, and five. Rarely will you see a par six or seven, but they are out there. Par three's are the shortest holes, typically measuring under 220 yards in length. Par four's see a common distance of between 220 yards to 430. Par fives are the longest holes and most golfers can not reach the green even if they hit two good shots. The distances of par fives are anything over 430 or so.

The average hole distances of PGA payers is going to be longer than you will probably find at your local course. I've seen some municipal courses have 220 yard par fours and 420 yard par fives. You would never see anything like that on the PGA Tour.
