A Complete Review Of The Classic Golf Clubs From The Era Between The 1950s Through To 1990s

The manufacturing of golf started in the early 1890s with the help of Scottish club maker Robert White. They produced wonderfully shaped clubs, both woods and irons, during their golden years from 1940 through to the start of the metal-woods period in the late 1970s. The shape and quality of their "toe grain" persimmon head woods are designed by most of the game's top players, which in turn created a "must have" for millions of amateur golfers worldwide. At their height in the 1960s and 1970s, The "key hole" woods commanded a high price some tour professionals would pay hundreds of pounds to secure a driver they felt they could use to play better golf. Professionals at this time were "masters" of the ball, unlike the power player of today, so how the club looked, how it sat, how deep the face was, and how much loft it had, were vital ingredients in the hands of the skilled player. Most often they had provided answers to these questions simply by looking so bright, and constructed with the best oil-hardened, tight grained persimmon-wood.

Progress is inevitable, and with it comes the introduction of the first hollow head, all-metal-woods in the late 1970s. Northwestern Golf Company in the USA, were among the very first to bring out this head but Taylor Made developed the market further, calling their metal-woods "Pittsburgh Persimmon". There was quite a resistance to the all-metal head by imposing many golfers initially, especially amongst tour pros. It was more difficult for the expert player to shape the ball to produce draw and fade with the hollow, or be it foam-filled metal head for high handicaps it was fantastic. First, they did not have to bother about looking after their woods as wet-weather loose sole plates loose or cracked inserts, and in particular skied shots that would mark. The varnish finish on a wooden head club, did not affect this material, and they also had a club that helped them to hit the ball straighter! Manufacturers loved the metal head because it was inexpensive and easier to reproduce than the "hands on" creating of a wooden head golf club, with all its processes of neck drilling, inserting, head shaping, sanding, staining and varnishing. So less skill is needed in the factory.

The metal head is produced for them by a casting company, and once a mold is made, thousands of identical heads could be produced easily. Manufacturers began to expect their heavily endorsed tour professionals to show the way and to start playing with them in tournaments, which they did. At around the same time, the graphite shaft was making its appearance. Lighter than steel, it encouraged more club head speed and, therefore, more distance. It was also much easier to fit into the short-neck of a metal-wood than the infinitely difficult long-neck of a wooden club. So within five years, wood-head production had ceased, the classic club was no longer used, and the new era with its new materials had replaced the old.
