Looking At The Goal Setting Theory From A Different Angle

February 25, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 140

Most articles on Goal Setting Theory talk about the findings of Edwin Locke and Gary Latham in their book titled "Goal Setting, A Motivational Technique That Works". This is an excellent book full of indepth and true findings in the work place which can just as easily be put to use in a personal perspective too.

However, I believe that what the reader wants from articles on Goal Setting Theory is, "What is goal setting and how do I go about it?" In other words, "tell me what the theory of goal setting is all about and then I'll put in the action necessary".

Without a doubt, setting goals can be challenging, but that doesn't mean you have an excuse not to do it. Setting goals is not original, nor can it be seen as a magical solution to attaining all your dreams. Most people don't stick to the goals they set because they haven't worked out the correct technique that works best for them.

The Goal Setting Theory starts with the process of:

IDENTIFYING WHAT IT IS YOU WANT. However, this can't just be a whim or idea, it absolutely has to be a burning desire, right from the bottom of your stomach, in order for you to carry through with the goal setting process. What is your real burning desire? This can't be stressed strongly enough. Without this fire in your belly, you will fall at the first hurdle. Once you have identified your goal, then everything else related to goal setting theory will fall into place. Wishing for something is one thing, having a strong desire for something is an entirely different feeling altogether. IDENTIFYING A TIMESCALE. This needs to be a realistic timescale, one that you know you can achieve but one which will also stretch you. Without the stretching, it becomes boring and uneventful. It could be a week, one month, one year, five years - it's up to you. IDENTIFYING YOUR ACTIONS. Once you've established the timescale, you then need to work out exactly how you are going to achieve this goal. If you are really serious about this, you will set daily goals, (these don't need to be big goals, but maybe something you can do everyday in your challenge to reach your goal by the set timescale. This shouldn't be a quick process and I highly recommend taking your time over this. IDENTIFYING THE BARRIERS YOU MAY COME ACROSS DURING THE GOAL SETTING PROCESS. If you know and accept that you will come across some negativity during the process, then you will find it easier to accept it, and challenges become smaller in proportion to what you thought would happen. Don't make the goal setting theory any more difficult that need but accept that you will come across blockages. Life is never that simple! TAKE ACTION. Believe it or not, this is where most people fail. It is actually very easy to write down your goals/dreams/desires, but not quite so easy to take that first step of putting in the action. This is why daily goals help to such a huge extent. One step at a time. But without action, you won't get any results. If you aren't serious about achieving your goals, and go into this half heartedly, don't be surprised by the results. REVIEW YOUR ACTIONS ON A WEEKLY BASIS. This focuses your mind on how you are getting on, and sets you up for the week ahead.

Challenge yourself to look at the whole goal setting theory process, and start today, don't procrastinate.

Procrastination is a killer, Action is a winner.
