Goal Setting: A Unique Approach to Success

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 140

Many success programs tell you to work with a mentor or even a mastermind group. That's excellent advice, but not always possible depending on your schedule and your location. There is another way that can be just as good.

You can create a "mental" coach, one who lives inside your imagination. This coach should encourage you and guide you every step of the way. If this sounds silly, remember that your mind is filled with chatter all of the time. You can't stop it.

You may as well use it to your advantage.

Your mental images and self talk started when you were a very young child, and will be with you for the rest of you life.

Why not choose the thoughts and images that are the most empowering to you and can help you achieve your goals? There's no reason to spend your alone time thinking of someone who criticizes you and puts you down. Mental critics do nothing but cause you pain and hold you back from your dreams.

The good news is that since you know how to get an inner critic, it will be easy for you to create your perfect coach. It's exactly the same process. It will just take some new mental habits.

Think of everyone you've ever known who has said words that lifted your spirit, who gave you good advice. With the power of your imagination, merge them into a single, loving mentor. Give this person a name. Give them an appearance. If you're by yourself, try talking out loud to them. You may foolish at first, but by doing this you can actually create new pathways in your brain. While your inner critic may insult and discourage, your new mentor will inspire and motivate you.

Your inner mentor is not just a silly thought.

When you create a vivid picture of this person, you are giving energy to a powerful force inside you.

Your mental coach can help with many things. He or she will help you every time you set a new goal, from setting a reasonable timeline, creating a plan of action and making sure you never lose heart. Best of all, your mentor will never get angry with you and will never laugh at you. When you need corrective feedback, he or she will give it gently and lovingly. When you're on the right track, your mentor will cheer you every step of the way. Use your imagination and give your inner mentor a chance. You may be surprised at what you can achieve.
