Discover The Missing Link From The SMART Goal Setting Chain

February 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 210

It's been said over and over that most people don't achieve their goals because they don't set any and therefore, don't know where they're going. True, but wonder why even when some people set goals, they are always missing a link in the chain. As a result, they don't achieve them.

I know, I was one of them, until I found the missing link. When I did, I saw everything with a new light and then was able to set goals I could achieve. Smart goal setting is letting your light shine. Are you ready? Let's do it!

As you may know S.M.A.R.T. means that our goals should be: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely. This is pretty straight forward and we all know the description, right? But, do we know the meaning?

I'll give you my personal take on their meaning and how I use this process to set goals I can achieve. You and only you can make it work for you.

Let's set goals that we can achieve. The S.M.A.R.T. acronym answers questions that'll take us where we want to go. Therefore, they demand for straight forward answers.

Are your goals Specific? The letter S answers the question What? Decide exactly what you want. Goals are Satisfying, Savvy, Sensible, Sharp, and Simple as A-B-C, Solid, Special, Straight forward, Suitable, and the seed of a big tree. They are distinctive, unique, and exclusive. They belong to you. They have a purpose, and are better than ordinary.

What they need: They require for you to seed them, nourish them and then when they are ready, you'll reap the rewards.

Measurable? It answers to How Much? You'll know when you get there. When smart goal setting is measurable, it is: meaningful, motivating, palpable, powerful, predictable, worthwhile, clear, and determined.

Attainable? Answers the How? It's at your hand's reach. It is accessible, actionable, adaptive, flexible, an ally, our anchor, appropriate, at hand, attracting, possible, practical, smart goal setting involves having a personal vision of what is should be and that it's there waiting for me to grab it.

Relevant? Why do you want to do it? It really matters to you. It's compatible and congruent with your lifestyle, personality, values, and interests. Smart goal setting is relevant when compels you to act.

It's convenient, critical, determining, driven, far-reaching, fitting, happy, imperative, inspired, on target, opportune, propitious, realistic, reasonable, representative, rewarding, right for you, well-chosen. It's so much so, that you feel great urgency and inner drive to do everything you must do to achieve it.

For me, Relevant is the most important piece of the engine that moves S.M.A.R.T goal setting. This is the missing link in the chain, remember? It's really the fuel that keeps this engine going non-stop.

Timely? When are you going to? They are well-timed. They have a deadline, a due date, marks the time to do it, the latest time to finish doing what you need to do. When smart goal setting is timely, it's bound by a time limit to get to your destination.

And finally remember to keep track of them to remain motivated when times get tough. Remember, it's a process, and as such, it requires direction, decision, determination, and mostly patience.

Setting and achieving goals is a one step forward--two steps backwards process. Keep moving no matter what.

Do you agree that the missing link in the SMART goal setting chain is Relevance?

Can you pursue a goal you don't deeply care about?

We were all created with a purpose. All we have to do is figure it out. It's hard and it's easy. Look deeply into your heart and buried you'll find it. Just remember it must matter to you so much, that nothing can stop you. Smart goal setting is not only about setting goals we can achieve but have a burning desire to!
