Research Methods - How to Breakthrough Genealogy Road Blocks

March 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 198

As you do your own genealogy research you may find, that you will come to a brick wall, or a road block which occurs when you have done research on one of your ancestors and then come to a point where it is seems that it not possible to get any more information about one or more of your ancestors.

Here are a few things you can do to breakthrough your research barrier:

  • Research Another Family Member
  • Use a Research Journal
  • Family Trees
  • Message Boards
  • Hire a Professional Genealogy Researcher

Researching through a family member of an ancestor, can sometimes breakthrough the brick wall that is preventing you from being able to do more research on that ancestor or family.

When your ancestors traveled from one place to another they usually traveled with other family members. Sometimes the lost ancestor will end up living in the household of another family member. Your ancestor could be living with a brother, a sister or even one of their own children.

Using a research journal is a very valuable tool that should be used in your genealogy research. When using a research journal you track every thing that you find, good or bad. You want to list the records you have searched and list what findings you have discovered or what records you have searched with no results found.

The benefit of this method is to identify where you have already searched so that you do not search the same record over and over and thereby wasting time by searching through records that you have already search through. Random genealogy research can find ancestors quickly but can lead to duplicated efforts in your genealogy research.

"Family Trees" are a good research key, they provide information about the family you are researching. However, "Family Trees" should not be considered as factual records. The problem with most family trees is that they may have little or no sources to document the findings in the family tree and may have many family relationship flaws.

Family trees are like a road map. It can give you insight as to where to search for your ancestor. Listing other family members as well as where your ancestor was living during a specific time, which can help you to find sources proving, or disproving a family tree.

Message Boards are another tool that can be used to uncover a lost ancestor or family member. When using a message board, create a message listing detailed information about your ancestor, keep your message concise and to the point, however you need to list enough information to enable someone to identify your ancestor. If you know very little about your ancestor, then list what you do know, list known family members or other facts about the ancestor which may help other researchers to identify and connect with your ancestor.

Finally after you have done all the work you can on an ancestor or you just do not want to put all that hard work and effort into finding your ancestor. You can always hire a professional genealogy researcher. It is good to contact the researcher to find out more about what he can offer for you.

Many genealogy researchers specialize in a specific area or type of research such as Native American, Adoption, British, German, Czech or another area of research. You need to find out what areas of expertise the researcher may have, how much does he cost and what type of results the researcher has been able to achieve.

About the Author

I have been doing genealogy research for many years. While working for Ancestry.com I was able to achieve a level 10 certification in genealogy research. During this time I worked on a research team called a "Genealogy Expert" and as a "Paid Genealogy Researcher".

I have created the web site GermanResearcher.com to provide a connection for those who are seeking help from a professional genealogy researcher.
