You Only Have a Patio Heater, So What Other Furniture Do You Need to Make Your Garden Look Amazing?

February 19, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 205

Picture the scene, a dull former vegetable garden off a quiet residential street in North Norfolk. The garden, belonging to my grandmother, is as flat as a pancake without any flowers or garden furniture in it. The only thing it does have is a gas patio heater. So how on earth can your transform a patch of land like this into something magical? How do you make sure a patio heater doesn't look too overwhelming? Granny has just moved into the property and has ambitious plans.

A year later I return to this garden. The results are simply breath-taking, this caterpillar of a garden has indeed been transformed into a stunning butterfly. The earthy soil has been replaced by a two tiered level lawn; there are now young heathers beginning to fill the earthy beds. I slowly turn round to capture this now amazing garden. Why does it work when Granny started with nothing apart from a patio heater on her terrace.

"It's the different levels," she says as she brings out a fresh cup of tea."You see over there I have given lots of height and interest to the borders. The teak garden furniture works for me because it looks stylish and only needs cleaning occasionally. You only have to paint it with some teak oil so it retains its colour."

As I discover teak is good for withstanding harsh weather. Granny's garden gets lots of wind coming from the sea so it has to be durable. But what about other types of garden furniture?

Cast Aluminum is also weather resistant and will last a long time explains Granny to me - she has a patio table and chairs made out of aluminum which fits in nicely next to the patio heater. She likes having the patio heater by the aluminum table not only because of the heat it creates but also because it gives some height. Another level of interest for the eye. This heater does, however, come with a wooden table but this works well next to the aluminum furniture.

I love the arch to the side of the patio heater. Climbing yellow roses are springing out giving not only plenty to look at but also an aroma to die for. This arch is made out of Cast Aluminum as well but further along the garden there's an arch made out of wood. Ivy dangles from this one. I can see a garden bench in the far corner and a small statue which gives the illusion of distance.

As the sun goes down, Granny lights the patio heater burner and takes out the playing cards. How magical I think as I watch the solar panel lights twinkle in her garden.
