Tips for You on Starting a Lemon Tree From a Seed

April 17, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 167

If you have not priced citrus trees then you will be shocked when you see the stickers on these fruit trees. Thirty dollars is about the average for a small plant and it is too easy to grow them from seed to pay that kind of money for them. There is one drawback to starting them yourself. You really need a fruit that came from a local tree and not one that came from the supermarket.

Fruits that have been sold at the supermarkets have often been genetically altered so that their seeds do not sprout and produce small offspring. Find someone in your area that has a lemon tree or someone that has an orange and start the seedling from the ones in them. It does not matter if you get a piece of fruit that is bad as long as it has some seeds inside you have what you need to work with.

You need to cut into the lemon and dig out the little seedpods. Once you have them away from the lemon you want to take about six paper towels and fold them together to make one towel. Now wet the towels thoroughly.

Take your freshly gotten seedpods and wash them with clean water and then place them on the paper toweling. You want to fold the paper so that it covers the little pieces completely and place it in an area where it will not get direct sunlight. Keep this paper wet at all times. You will more than likely have to put water on it every two to three days in order for it to remain moist enough to sprout the little trees for you.

You will more than likely keep this up for a week to two weeks. When you see the sprouts starting then you are ready to place your seedling into some dirt. You want a high quality potting soil and a very small container that drains well. You will plant the seedling and barely cover it with dirt. You have to keep this dirt moist at all times. You can however allow the little plant to have some sunlight at this time.

Watch the baby plant grow and when it has three or more leaves protruding from the top of the stem you will be ready to transplant it into a larger container that it will remain in until it outgrows it. You want to try and have the container large enough that you do not have to transplant it more than once a year. So a 6 to 8 inch container will be best for the first year of growth.

Remember that you are dealing with a delicate baby so when you set it outside allow it to get partial shade. You want to bring it inside when the temperatures start to threaten to reach freezing, and you want to repeat the transplanting and the protecting for at least three years. After that time it will be ready to plant in your yard.
