Is Raised Bed Gardening For You?

April 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 148

I am passionate about gardening because one can enjoy the beauty of the flowers and the tastes of fresh vegetables throughout the spring and summer. Several years ago I constructed my first raised bed garden. Since that time it has become an annual rite of passage. What makes this a great hobby is that you can tailor your involvement based upon your time and your resources. You are only limited by the amount of space that you have available. The materials required to construct an elevated garden are available everywhere often in your own backyard or you may opt to purchase the materials from a garden store or a lumber yard. But before you start buying materials you need to first have a garden plan. The reason you need a plan is that it will save you time and money.

There are many benefits derived from constructing a raised bed garden. The first that comes to mind is the nutritional vegetables and beautiful flowers for cut arrangements that you can grow at a fraction of the cost of buying them retail. Fresh vegetables are hard to come by in many areas of the country. Flowers purchased from a store or florist don't seem to be as fragrant nor do they last as long as flowers cultivated in your yard. When I see tomatoes and green vegetables selling for over one dollar a pound it motivates me to get out and grow my own.

Above ground gardening can be a family affair. I'm always amazed at how much children love to grow things. Growing things appeals to a child's basic instincts and gives them a sense of accomplishment. It also helps children understand how nature works. There is something wonderful about working in soil and watching the things that you've planted grow to maturity. It also gives a greater appreciation for the beauty of God's creation.

After being confined to the inside of one's home from November through March it is great to get outside and breathe the fresh air and to stretch muscles that haven't been used on a regular basis. Gardening stimulates the senses and provides an opportunity to personalize your landscape by adding colorful plants and flowers in raised garden beds.

For the first time gardener it is imperative to begin with a plan. Raised bed Garden plans are also beneficial to the experienced gardener. The plans provide an overview of the materials necessary as well as resources that are available close to home. Seeds and bedding plants are available at stores like Kmart, Walmart, Lowe's as well as garden stores. Each year I save seeds from peppers, tomatoes, okra and flowering plants. This allows me to get a head start by growing plants to transplant later and it saves time and money used to shop at a local nursery.

The time is now to prepare for a protective growing season and it all begins with a raised bed garden plan.
