How to Integrate a Solar Fountain Into a Japanese Patio Garden

April 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 180

Water has historically been a central part of Japanese culture. Water has a give and take relationship with man. It gives life, wealth, wisdom, and nourishes the body, and it takes away evil and bad luck by virtue of its simple cleansing properties. Flowing water represents a person's motivation and effectiveness in society, while a person's clarity of mind is revealed through still water. Incorporating a solar water fountain into a Japanese-inspired patio garden supports the use of this important water element.

You should strive to use natural materials when creating a Japanese garden therefore, rocks, water and plants are all things to place in this type of garden. The size of the garden is not as important as shaping the materials inside it, making a patio or deck the perfect place to create a Japanese-inspired garden. This type of garden usually has defined boundaries, marked by bamboo poles, a trellis, a screen, or low gate. You should be able to look into, or at, the space, rather than walk through it.

When placing rocks in the garden, groupings of three are recommended. This corresponds to the structure of the universe; heaven, earth and mankind. Non-living features should be more prominent than the plants in this type of garden. Attempt to achieve balance by placing taller plants next to bushy ones, sharper angled items near things with gentle bends, and larger rocks coupled with smaller ones. Plants that bloom at different times are also ideal.

Water in motion can be achieved by using a solar fountain in your patio garden. A solar fountain is lightweight and portable, allowing you to place it where you choose. It only needs the power of the sun to operate the pump. It is not recommended to place the solar fountain in the center of the garden. Decorative pebbles placed in the basin of the solar fountain are another good use of the rock element. In a traditional Japanese garden, a waterfall or pond might be used to represent water. Working in a smaller space, such as a patio or deck, allows you pay homage to the natural water element and utilize a garden fountain. A fountain that is operated by the sun lends itself to being more natural than an electrical fountain.

Other items to use in a Japanese-inspired patio garden are ornaments such as: stone lanterns, torches, stone towers, a Buddha statue, and wooden plant barrels. Give yourself a comfortable place to sit and enjoy the garden by positioning a wooden bench nearby.

It is recommended that some type of potted evergreen be included in your patio garden. Evergreens maintain their color all year-round, and represent youth and longevity. Evergreens are excellent for containers, as are Japanese Boxwoods. Small Azalea bushes, Iris and Morning Glory are good flowering plants. There are many types of planters available for these shrubs and plants. Low and tall tapered slate planters are an attractive option, as are fiberglass Asian fishbowl planters.

A Japanese-inspired garden on your patio will create a sense of energy and stability that can be enjoyed right outside your back door. By using rocks, plants and a solar water fountain, this garden will allow you to enjoy what nature has to offer.
