A Guide to Oil Drilling Process

March 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 146

Oil is considered a fossil fuel and found in various countries worldwide. It is formed from the remains of animals, and plants & trees that died in ancient oceans millions of years back. The organisms sank into the mud and sand at the ocean bottom after they died.

These organisms underwent various chemical processes underneath and got converted into organic material. The pressure and heat distilled these materials into natural gas and crude oil. This process took millions of years.

How to Find Oil

Geologists are responsible for finding oil under the earth. They can either be employed by a private firm or by an oil company directly. They are able to find the most appropriate conditions for trapping oil such as reservoir rock, right source rock and entrapment. Earlier geologists used to interpret the surface features of the earth, rock and soil types. They used to take out small core samples with the help of shallow drilling to test in the laboratories.

These days, geologists examine terrain and surface rocks with the help of satellite images. They also use a lot of technical methods to perform this task. They make use of sensitive gravity meters to gauge small changes alterations in the gravitational field of ground, which shows flowing oil and sensitive magnetometers. With this, they can measure the changes in the magnetic field of the ground because of flowing oil.

With the help of sensitive electronic noses commonly called sniffers, they are able to sense the odor of hydrocarbons. One of the most common techniques is regarding seismology, which is used to create shock waves. They go by the buried rock layers to interpret the waves which get back to the surface.

Drilling Process

After the drilling site has been chosen, proper survey must be done to verify its boundaries and impact on the environment. Titles, right-of way accesses, and land agreements are obtained and make sure that they are according to the legal liabilities. Legal jurisdiction must also be determined for off-shore drilling sites.

Below mentioned are some steps to prepare the land for drilling process:

1. The land is cleaned and leveled. Access roads are built for transportation.

2. The availability of water is one of the most important requirements. Water wells are drilled in the absence of natural source of water nearby.

3. In order to dispose of the drilling mud and rock cuttings, the team digs a reserve pit which is covered with plastic to prevent any negative impacts to the environment.
