Why Is It Necessary to Conduct Audience Analysis Before Designing Course Content?

April 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 192

For an instructional designer, conducting an audience analysis is extremely important as it helps in designing the instructional program in an informed way. To design such a program, you have to know your learners and ensure that they can effectively communicate with the course material. In short, while designing the course module, you must know your learners' requirements and demands.

Chalking out the course vision, goals and outcomes

Understanding your audience or learners, helps you to get an idea about your course design. The process will enable you to identify the key requirements of the learners and encourage them to give their best. For example, if you are designing a course to explain safety procedures in a manufacturing unit, the sole objective of the course content should be to communicate to learners in such a way so that they realize the importance of following safety procedures at their workplace.

Make sure that the study material is convincing enough to make a learner diligently practice all the safety procedures when the time comes for them to actually execute it.

Identify the topics to be covered, type of assignments and activities

Secondly, while designing the course content, it is essential to identify key topics that need to be addressed in the course module. As a result, a detailed analysis on the learner's preferences and requirements need to be chalked out, before you design assignments and activities for the students. For an instructional program on product training for sales professionals, it is extremely important that the course material effectively imparts detailed knowledge about particular products or services. As a result, the study material should essentially focus upon the product and provide detailed inputs regarding its features and benefits to the sales team. In this way, the design of the course module largely depends on what your target audience is looking for.

Finalizing the learning strategy and content presentation

The sole objective of learning should be addressed equipped with a proper learning strategy. Hence, determining the profile of your learners is of vital significance, as it would help you to follow an effective strategy. Before you design any instructional material, check out what is the medium in which the courses will be delivered, whether the learners are comfortable with digital media, and so on. Depending on these criteria, you have to decide how to use the GUI, course navigation and the audio and video content in the course material.

According to industry experts, an instructional designer must be perfectly aware of the audience's requirement before they start designing a course for an instructional program.
