Furnishings and More for Children's Bedrooms

April 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 319

You have to try and think as a child does when decorating their bedroom, after all they don't want the same things adults' desire such as elegant accessories and priceless ornaments, they want fun items and small sized pieces of furniture that give them independence and reflects their own personality.

The approach you need to employ involves asking them for their opinion in colour schemes and furnishings as this will give them the chance to show you what they like, not only that but safety aspects have to be thought of, and furniture should also have a function not only be decorative. The idea is to create a room where there's plenty of places to store stuff away, keeps the child entertained, and stops them from calling you every time they want to get something down from a high shelf.

For children the bedroom should be as it is for an adult, a place where they can have privacy, even they are entitled to this. As well as a place to take their friends to play, read books, do schoolwork, maybe even watch the TV, and tell their younger brother and sisters to 'leave them alone!'

It's the place where they can keep their possessions and collection of comics knowing they won't be disturbed by anyone, where they can write their diary out of sight of prying eyes, and where they can listen to music - all part of growing up and having some independence.

Before starting to shop for furniture or decorate take the time to have a chat with your child about what they might like. Themes are always fun in kids' rooms so if you have a little girl and she wants pink walls then either indulge her with pink walls or compromise by painting them a warm white but then buying a bright pink bedspread and cushions for contrast.

Quilts with Disney characters are easy enough to find and all kids have a favourite Disney character, and they are quite affordable. Allowing your child to have some say in the décor will encourage them to want to spend time in there.

If they have a special collection of dolls or action figures then build some shelves so they can be displayed, this will give the room spirit and show any visitor what the youngster likes. Toy storage boxes are always popular too.

One of the main complaints from parents about their children is that they are so untidy! There is a way to beat this and that's first to ensure you provide enough storage space in the room, consider a wardrobe with shelves, a wooden toy box or large baskets to throw stuff into, and a bedside table for all those little bits and pieces to be tidied away. Next you have to actually show them where everything belongs and how to keep their things all clean and packed away once they have finished with them. The message might need repeating a few times but eventually it will get through to them.

A child's room should be equipped with all the necessities such as a bed, children's wardrobes and chest of drawers, but it's also a good idea to set up separate little areas. For example a desk and chair in the corner where they can sit and do homework quietly, a music centre or cd player to listen to music, their own TV if you have the budget, and some shelves with books on display where they can practice reading their favourite books.

It's important to remember that your child will change their mind very quickly and as they grow and mature tastes will change very fast. That's why it's not so important to spend too much money on expensive items when they are very young, also make changes practical and easy to do. Painting a room black because that's their favourite colour won't only be depressing but will also involve a lot of work once they are fed up with it or go off to college and their younger sister has been promised the room and wants it to be pink!
