Do You Suffer From Insomnia? Perhaps a New Headboard Is in Order

April 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 183

Insomnia is a type of disorder defined by a person's inability to get to sleep or stay asleep. Though many people are familiar with the condition, very few actually understand its causes and consequences.

There are actually many types of insomnia, all of which vary in severity. One of the mildest forms of the disorder is Transient Insomnia, which may only last for very short periods of time, with symptoms recurring for a week or less. At the other end of the spectrum is Chronic Insomnia, an extreme form of the condition which can last months at a time and lead on to any number of related physical and psychiatric problems, including hallucinations, muscular fatigue and mental fatigue.

Not all insomnia effects sleep in the same way. Some people suffer from 'sleep-onset insomnia,' which is characterized by a difficulty getting to sleep at the beginning of the night. Others experience nocturnal awakenings, where a person wakes up in the middle of the night and is unable to return to sleep afterwards.

Many people wrongly diagnose themselves with insomnia when in fact they are suffering from sleep state misperception, where a person underestimates the actual number of hours they have slept, believing they have only had 4 to 5 hours when they have had many more.

Treating insomnia can be complex or simple depending on the severity of the condition. Hypnosis, therapy and medicine all play a part. However, many people fail to recognise a more obvious cause and cure. Their bed.

The role your bed plays in helping you get to and stay asleep at night cannot be overestimated. Choosing a bed that meets all your bedtime criteria may be the miracle cure you have been looking for.

Start with your mattress. If it is lumpy or in any way uncomfortable think about replacing or even upgrading. Memory foam mattresses are some of the best on the market. They offer complete comfort and support by moulding to the shape and size of your body and will stop you from tossing and turning.

If you are sharing your bed with another person, make sure it is large enough. A King Size or Super King Size bed should be sufficient. Also ensure your mattress is offering equal support to you both.

For anyone having difficulty falling asleep at the beginning of the night, high quality headboards can also make a lot of difference. Your headboard is designed to offer your back support when you are sat up in bed. The more comfortable you are in this position the easier it will be to drift off to sleep. By choosing a custom designer headboard you will also have the option of personalizing it with a range of different colours and fabrics.

If you suffer from allergies or asthma, it may be a good idea to invest in some hypoallergenic bedding.

Joint and back pain are one of the leading causes of sleepless nights and the main culprit is your bed frame. A good bed frame should be firm, but also soft enough to match the natural contours of your body. Your headboard can also help by offering back support.

Finally, the overall layout of your bedroom and the position of your bed can have a positive impact on your sleeping. Try to strike a good balance between comfort and appearance when deciding on the position and size of your bed and avoid occupying too much floor space with your bed including headboards.

Remember, between 20 and 40% of adults suffer from insomnia. If you are struggling to get to sleep don't baulk at the cost of creating the perfect sleeping environment for your individual needs. Make the changes mentioned and before you know it you will be drifting off to sleep every night without fail.
