Understanding Contemporary Furniture and Modern Furniture

June 08, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 244

Understanding contemporary furniture and modern furniture isn't always easy. It may seem like the definitions of each are changing all the time. Well, in some ways that's true, especially where contemporary furniture is concerned.

You see, contemporary furniture mainly refers to furniture made in a certain time. So, 1920s furniture is considered to be 1920s contemporary. The same is true for any other decade or period, including the present time period. Therefore, today's furniture is contemporary to those of us living today.

When it comes to buying contemporary furniture or designing a space with it, the exact furniture you choose will depend on what era you are trying to duplicate. It may also depend on what region you are trying to duplicate. For example, current contemporary furniture made in Japan is not the same as current contemporary furniture made in the USA. So, it's important to decide what your own definition of contemporary is.

There are similar problems with defining modern furniture. When most people define the word "modern" they use words like "current", "now" and "present". That's a fair definition, but the modern furniture movement actually started out as the modernism movement, which didn't really have to do with staying current.

You see, it all began back in the World War II era when new materials were being used for the war effort. Some of those materials included things like plywood. People of that time were much more interested in functional furniture than in furniture that was artistic or pretty. So, designers started to focus more on easy pieces that were clean, simplistic and functional.

In later years, the Japanese culture had an influence on the modernism movement because the Japanese people have long embraced the idea of minimalism and making the best use of pieces. Yet, Japanese pieces have always looked good as well. So, newer modernism pieces, while still mainly emphasizing function, also started to look a bit more artistic and, in some cases, even futuristic. The use of chrome, metal, glass and other materials gave modern pieces a shiny, glossy and stylish look.

During the 1920s and the rest of the time leading up to the World War II era, Germany also had some influences on modern and contemporary furniture. In fact, their Bauhaus school was famous for furniture design. So, it wasn't just Japan that influenced what we now know as modernism.

In fact, some of the best modernism pieces have come from the merging of more than one culture. For example, a designer named Noguchi, who was Japanese-American, created a coffee table that is know as one of the most famous pieces of modern furniture. That's no surprise, since every furniture movement throughout history has been influenced by the movements before it or the blending of cultures.

So, understanding contemporary furniture and modern furniture is easy, as long as you understand how the definitions are used. Each piece is unique in and of itself. Yet, they are all part of a bigger picture and a rich history of furniture making.
