A Successful Fundraiser

February 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 225

Organizing a fundraiser can be successfully accomplished by any group or individual who is interested in raising money for a not-for-profit venture such as a charity, a school in need of funding for a specific educational experience, or a sports team needing to offset the expense of new equipment. The purpose of the campaign cannot be simply about raising money for personal profit. Fundraisers are a great opportunity not only to raise funds for your organization but to also raise awareness within the community about your cause.

Choose a Team Leader

In order for any fundraising program to be successful it is necessary to have a leader- someone who will stay motivated throughout the campaign. This person should have great organizational as well as communication skills as all participants will need to stay informed and motivated! It is also helpful to have one person who is in charge of collecting the monies- this can be the leader or someone who is willing to work closely with he or she.

Set a Goal

A successful fundraiser will begin by determining the amount of money that needs to be raised in order to be helpful. Having a goal will allow you to choose an appropriately priced item to sell, as well as providing motivation for the participants ie those that are doing the actual selling.

Choose a Product

Next you will need to choose a product to sell! There are a number of things to consider when making this decision:

What interests the members of your group? They will be more comfortable selling items that they themselves would be likely to use.How motivated are your members? What type of clients do you expect to sell to?What image do you want to convey by the product you are selling?

Length of Fundraiser

How long should the campaign run? The answer to this will vary according to the objectives of the fundraiser as well as the motivation of its participants. A campaign that runs for 2-4 weeks can be quite successful- it is easier to maintain enthusiasm than it is for a longer time frame. A specific start and end date for the campaign will allow for 'pep rallies' and wrap up ceremonies which will also keep the motivation levels high.

Promoting Your Fundraiser

It is highly recommended that you promote your event prior to sending out your first 'sales person'. Send letters home with students or team members; hang posters wherever allowed; post the event on your organizations website. The more people who know what you are selling and why you need to raise money prior to members 'knocking on doors' the easier it will be to sell your product.

When it is time to launch the campaign do so in a BIG way with a rally! Let the participants know how much money you need to raise and why it is needed! Make your campaign fun and educational for all involved.

Safety First

While it is important to for everyone to have fun it is imperative that safety be the number one priority of all fundraising campaigns. Be sure that all members of your selling team acknowledge and follow these safety rules:

Never sell by yourself- always bring a friend or a parentNever go into anyone's home- wait outside while they search for moneyNever carry large amounts of cash-empty your money container frequently even if it means an inconvenient trip back home

Selling Tips for Your Fundraiser

Here are some great tips to help make selling any fundraising product easier:

Know why you are fundraising- make the tangible reason (ie new sports equipment, new furnace for the church, trip abroad for senior students) a part of your sales pitchBe proud of your group and the reason that you want to help themSmile and be cheerfulBe politeSell to people who you know first- family, friends, neighboursHAVE FUN

When you are ready to begin organizing a fundraiser contact the Pizza Yolas - they have more than 20 years of fundraising experience that they would be happy to share. They have a keen desire to help people and have been part of several non-profit organizations so they understand the need to raise money.
