How to Keep Friendships Alive From Miles Away

April 11, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 172

Has a dear friend just announced they're moving away? It's always going to be an absolutely horrible time of goodbyes, packing, leaving parties, drunken memory sharing and more goodbyes, but these days it's not as hard as you'd think to stay in touch with someone living in another part of the country or abroad. Explore your possibilities for keeping your friendship alive from afar. You'll learn to appreciate the times you do see each other so much more!

Think of all the exciting things you could get up to on reunions. Not only does your friend moving away mean you have an excuse to go on a visit, indulge in some serious sightseeing and pampering, but also the possibility of planning other reunion activities, like spa weekends, city breaks in foreign destinations and more.

Lots of hotels throughout the world offer special weekend packages or deals for groups of friends, and can even organise reunion dinners and events like sports activities. Look out for these kinds of opportunities at beach resorts and cities. Alternatively, you can get a bunch of friends together to rent a cottage or holiday villa somewhere you've always wanted to go. It's a fun way of discovering new places and spending an intense few days together catching up and going on local adventures, cooking together and sharing stories over drinks.

Keeping in Touch

The rise of the internet has made it so much easier to keep in touch on a regular basis. Skype is free for anyone to use so you could be video chatting away to your friend for the whole day if that's what you feel like doing. Facebook and other social networks and photo sharing platforms are an excellent way of staying up to date with what your friend's been up to. Sending e-mails has never been easier.

You can also text each other whenever something urgent comes up that you need to tell that specific friend.

Also, don't forget the more traditional methods of keeping in touch via the post. Letters are a really personal way of expressing yourself and mean so much more than e-mails. They can be treasured for years ahead. For an even more memorable postal exchange, be sure to shower your friend with birthday and Christmas gifts as well as the occasional surprise package. Parcels to Europe and further afield don't cost the earth and are such a nice gesture.

Keep that spark in your friendship alive. But remember not to get upset that your friend finds other people to spend time with. It's only natural to develop a new social circle when you move somewhere. Just remind him or her that you're always there for them, and try to be in touch as often as possible. You'll find that the less often you catch up, the more you will value and appreciate the times you do.
