Friends, Friendship - What Is It All About?

April 04, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 182

I have become weary of somethings and some people. I have been called naive and I don't believe it is a good thing. However, I choose to object and say it is a good thing, in most cases, you are straightforward in your thinking. It means, you are always thoughtful of others and would therefore not hurt anyone for selfish reasons.

It also occurred to me that nowadays, very few people do the same for others. The proverb "keep your friends close, and your enemies closer" carries a lot of weight with it simply because it is a warning. Having your enemy closer, you are able to watch and predict their next move and therefore are always a step ahead. This, and many other similar proverbs do show that as humans, we are always in competition.

Becoming weary of some people does not mean that I dislike them, it means, the best thing about having the worst time in your life is that you get to know who your true friends are. I would like to talk about my story, which I am sure is not as bad as many others, but in summary, I have three people I can rely on excluding family. Imagine that! Yet I know other two hundred "friends". What is your definition of a friend?

A couple of weeks back, an ex-boyfriend wanted to remain friends. After a month of not seeing each other, we had a group meeting (we belong in the same investment group). As I looked at him and the changes that had taken place in a month, I couldn't help but wonder about a couple of things, some of which bordered on the lines of "why", "what" and "I must have been very high on something". Everything I liked about him, I now felt indifferent. To make matters worse, we went home using the same bus and we had nothing to talk about. It was then that I knew what I want in a man, and that is a man I can talk to about anything. Him, he cannot be my friend, I don't want it. He is and will be someone I knew a long time ago and ran into again recently, every time we meet.

I ask yet again, what is your definition of a friend? Are friends people we trust, rely on, depend on? Are they people we can talk to about anything and not worry about being judged?

To me a friend is a companion, someone who will understand me when I don't talk, someone who will hold my hand when I want to jump over the wall, someone who will "slap" me back to me senses when what I am about to make a mistake. A friend is someone who despite how I talk, s/he will listen without tiring. A friend is someone I can call upon just to cry or laugh. Someone with whom, despite our different and defined paths in life, we will walk, talk, laugh, together, understand each other and know that despite the hurdles and challenge that we face in this lifetime, we always have each other. A friend does not have to have an end. To me, a friend has to be true and honest, what about you? Who is your friend?
