The Best Draft Picks by the New York Jets

April 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 180

In 1959, the New York Jets were founded, though they were then called the Titans. The franchise made the playoffs for the first time in 1968, where it went on to compete in Super Bowl III, defeating the Baltimore Colts for the American Football League's first Super Bowl win. The Jets have been privileged to have excellent players at many different positions. The best players to be drafted by the New York Jets are Mo Lewis, Mark Gastineau and Joe Namath.

No. 3: Mo Lewis, LB, (1991 - 2003)

The Jets got a steal in the 3rd round of the 1991 NFL Draft when they were able to select Mo Lewis. The three-time Pro Bowler was the defensive captain from 1997 to 2003. He was loved by teammates and is third on the all-time list of games played for the Jets. Ironically, Mo Lewis may be best remembered for bringing the New England Patriots' star quarterback Tom Brady to the NFL world, after his crushing hit on then-Patriots starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe. Brady replaced Bledsoe in the game, and the rest is history. Lewis was more than just one hit, however; he was a three-time Pro Bowl selection who achieved with the Jets 1,231 tackles (883 of them solo tackles), 52.5 sacks, 14 interceptions, 79 pass deflections, 29 forced fumbles, 13 recovered fumbles and five defensive touchdowns. Mo Lewis was a reliable and productive player for the Jets.

No. 2: Mark Gastineau, DL, (1979 - 1988)

Mark Gastineau was one of the most feared pass rushers to ever play the game. In only 100 career starts, he reached the mark of 100 sacks. He was extremely quick and known for never giving up. Drafted in Round 2 of the 1979 draft, he made it to five consecutive Pro Bowls from 1981 to 1985. His best statistical season was in 1984, with 22 sacks, 69 tackles and a fumble recovered and returned for a touchdown. Renowned for his "sack dance," he was a straightforward type of person. He finished with 107.5 sacks in his career, and it only a matter of time before he takes his rightful place in the Hall of Fame.

No. 1: Joe Namath, QB, (1965 - 1976)

Joe Namath is the only Jets quarterback to lead the team to a Super Bowl appearance (Super Bowl III). He won Super Bowl III, being named MVP of the game, and the Jets have "Broadway Joe" to thank for their only Super Bowl title to date. The Hall of Famer of 1985 and 12th pick of the 1965 NFL Draft spent 12 years with the Jets. During his career, he accumulated 173 touchdowns on 1,886 completions for 27,057 yards. His name is synonymous with Jets football, he was the first professional quarterback to throw for 4,000 passing yards and he was named Rookie of the Year in 1965.

Joe Namath is a household name in Jets football for players and fans alike, thanks to his "guaranteed" Super Bowl III win. His contribution is evident and his success magnified, as there is yet to be a player to match what he was able to do for the franchise. Joe Namath is the best player drafted by the New York Jets.
