The Best Draft Picks by the Denver Broncos

April 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 151

The Denver Broncos began playing in the American Football League in 1960 and joined the NFL when the AFL-NFL merger occurred in 1970. The team has won six AFC championships and two consecutive Super Bowls in the 1990s, making it one of the most successful teams in the NFL. The best players drafted by the Denver Broncos are Randy Gradishar, Shannon Sharpe and Terrell Davis.

No. 3: Randy Gradishar, LB, (1974 - 1983)

The 14th overall pick of the 1974 NFL Draft, Randy Gradishar amassed over 2,000 tackles, 20.5 sacks and 20 interceptions during his career. He was the leader of the Denver "Orange Crush" defense of the 1970s and was the glue to that well-disciplined unit of defenders. He appeared in seven Pro Bowls and was the Defensive Player of the Year in 1978.

No. 2: Shannon Sharpe, TE, (1990 - 1999 & 2002 - 2003)

Shannon Sharpe was drafted in the 7th round of the 1990 NFL Draft. The Hall of Famer of 2011 was a major trash talker, and he is probably one of the best at talking and still producing ever to play in the NFL. He had eight Pro Bowl appearances and was a part of the team that won two Super Bowls in Denver. He is the first tight end to reach over 10,000 receiving yards. He was a great route runner who made big plays, so much so that teams had to start double-teaming him. Shannon Sharpe defined what it means to put your words into action.

No. 1: Terrell Davis, RB, (1995-2002)

Terrell Davis was the 196th pick of the 1995 NFL Draft, and what a sleeper he turned out to be! Davis is the Broncos' all-time leader in rushing, with 7,607 yards. He made it to the Pro Bowl on three occasions and was part of the Broncos team that won consecutive Super Bowls (XXXII and XXXIII). He is one of five running backs to surpass 2,000 rushing yards in a single season. Davis is considered one of the greatest running backs in the history of the game. He was named the Offensive Player of the Year in 1997 and 1998 and the MVP of the league in 1998. He averaged 4.6 yards per carry and 60 touchdowns in his career shortened by injury.

Not many will think of Davis as the best player drafted by the Broncos when there is a certain John Elway in the picture. Elway, however, was technically acquired as a rookie in a trade from the Baltimore Colts after refusing to play for the team that drafted him. As a result, the next most influential player for the franchise was one who gave his all and helped the team to its only two Super Bowl victories. Terrell Davis is the best player drafted by the Denver Broncos.
