The Best Draft Picks by the Cincinnati Bengals

April 09, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 159

The Cincinnati Bengals were founded in 1966 and were originally a member of the American Football League (AFL). The 1970s and 1980s were the best periods for the franchise, when the Bengals established themselves as a consistent playoff team. The Bengals won the AFC Championship in 1981 and 1989 but lost in Super Bowl XVI and XXIII. The Bengals have made the playoffs on 10 occasions. The best players drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals are Isaac Curtis, Ken Anderson and Anthony Munoz.

No. 3: Isaac Curtis, WR, (1973 - 1984)

Isaac Curtis was a first-round pick in the 1973 NFL Draft. He was blessed with tremendous speed and there was simply no one who could keep up with him. It is because of Isaac Curtis that the rule was introduced that defenders could only push off on a wide receiver within five yards. What teams were doing was double- and triple-teaming Curtis and holding the player down the field. He exceled at making catches at critical points in games and was very good at earning yards after the catch. He helped the team to the Super Bowl in 1981 and he was named to four Pro Bowls. In his 12 seasons with the Bengals he had 416 receptions, 7,101 receiving yards with 53 touchdowns.

No. 2: Ken Anderson, QB, (1971 - 1986)

Ken Anderson was selected to the Pro Bowl on four occasions and amassed over 32,000 passing yards, 197 touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 81.9 for his career.Anderson was drafted in the 1971 NFL Draft in the third round. He led the NFL in passing in 1974 and 1975. In 1981 he was named both the NFL MVP and NFL Comeback Player of the Year. When Anderson left the game, he held the records for consecutive pass completions, single game completion percentage and season completion percentage. Ken Anderson will be remembered for his humility and gracefulness.

No. 1: Anthony Munoz, OL, (1980-1992)

Anthony Munoz was drafted as the third overall pick of the 1980 NFL Draft. Munoz was considered a huge risk by many when the Bengals drafted him, but he became a starter for the Bengals in his rookie season and he remained a starter for the team for the next 13 seasons. Munoz is considered to be one of the greatest offensive linemen to have played in the NFL and was named to 11 Pro Bowls. He was a part of the Bengals team that made it to Super Bowl XVI and XXIII but couldn't get by the San Francisco 49ers on either occasion. In 1981, 1987 and 1988 he was named NFL Lineman of the Year. He played in 185 games and started in 182 of them. He was named to the Hall of Fame in 1998.

The Bengals have yet to win a Super Bowl, but the franchise has come very close to doing so on two occasions. The reason for the franchise to even be in such a position is because of the hard work of Anthony Munoz, and for this he is the best player drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals.
