A Modern Day Hero in Their Own Way

June 04, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 226

What if one day you wake up and you can't do the things that you've always loved anymore? This is exactly how the young men of Gridiron Heroes are. They are a group of high school football players who have experienced catastrophic spinal cord injury and can never play football again.

Some of these men have been on comatose for weeks. While some didn't make it, some lived on wheelchairs or worse, cases of brain damage. All their hopes and dreams have been put to a halt because of one mishap. Aside from helping them raise funds to acquire financial help, the foundation helps them on coping with their lives as normally as possible. These men may be gravely injured but Gridiron Heroes assures them that they're never forgotten. Somehow, the organization has become their modern day hero in helping them overcome their pain.

Gridiron Heroes' head and founder, Eddie Canales, knows how these young men's families' feel because his son, Chris, had the same incident. Just about ten years ago, Chris Canales had a serious injury that made him stop playing football forever. Right before his high school graduation, he had three college scouts eyeing for him. All his life, he thought football ran the course of his life but after the incident, he and his father realized that there was more to life than football.

In a span of ten years, there are at least 79 cases of high school football players who acquire spinal cord injury. The huge difference here is that this group of injured young men do not get that much support compared to professional players. They are in fact, high school seniors who are still aspiring to make it to the big leagues.

What most isn't aware of is the pain they have to go through at such a young age. Moreover, the financial woes their families encounter. According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center, this kind of injury can cost up to $200,000 to $800,000 in the first year alone. Most of the families that are under the foundation are average Americans who sent their sons to public high schools aiming that they could make it in college because of the sport.

To ease the pains and trials, Gridiron Heroes aims to provide immediate, as well as, long term resources and support to individuals sustaining a catastrophic spinal cord injury through activities associated with high school football.

The foundation's modern day hero goals focus on raising funds, counselling and conducting seminars for coaches and high school football teams all over USA for a safer sport.
