2012 Minnesota Vikings Offseason Needs

May 30, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 170

The Minnesota Vikings had hoped that with the addition of Donovan McNabb last year, he could keep the team competitive while Christian Ponder learned the offense. However, McNabb quickly played himself out of the lineup. The Vikings finished with just a 3-13 record, but worse than that, star running back Adrian Peterson tore his ACL and MCL in a meaningless game in December. Even with Peterson in the lineup, Minnesota doesn't seem like it will be much of a factor in the NFC North anytime soon. Here are some of the Vikings' big additions and subtractions so far in the young offseason, plus a breakdown of their biggest needs heading into the draft.

Additions:

TE John Carlson

OT/G Geoff Schwartz

CB Chris Carr

CB Zackary Bowman

ILB Marvin Mitchell

FB Lex Hilliard

Subtractions:

G Steve Hutchinson

G Anthony Hererra

SS Tyrell Johnson

S Jarrad Page

CB Cedric Griffin

ILB E.J. Henderson (free agent)

TE Visanthe Shiancoe (free agent)

Top 5 Needs:

1. Left Tackle

If the Vikings want to protect their prized first-round investment, starting quarterback Christian Ponder, then they need to find a way to replace Charlie Johnson at left tackle. With the St. Louis Rams trading away the No. 2 pick in the draft, the Vikings are now free to draft USC's Matt Kalil. The best way to rebuild successfully is to rebuild on both the offensive and defensive lines. By selecting Kalil, the Vikings will solidify the left tackle spot for the next decade.

2. Wide Receiver

With the departure of Sydney Rice, the Vikings really missed his play on the outside. Their only legit wideout on the current roster is Percy Harvin, who led the team with 87 catches for 967 yards and six touchdowns. After him are Devin Aromashodu and Michael Jenkins, who combined for 64 receptions for 934 yards and four touchdowns. It goes without saying that Minnesota needs to start adding more weapons for Ponder, especially with Peterson sidelined for a good chunk of the season. The Vikings might be tempted to take Oklahoma State's Justin Blackmon with their first-round pick, but I believe that the right pick would be Kalil.

3. Cornerback

The cornerback spot is another position that needs to be upgraded. At 35, Antoine Winfield is no longer a reliable option. Chris Cook is battling legal issues, and the Vikings decided to let go of Cedric Griffin. They signed free agents Chris Carr and Zachary Bowman, but they should look to add even more depth.

4. Offensive Guard

Starters Steve Hutchinson and Anthony Herrera were cut in the offseason and both will have to be replaced. If the Vikings add Kalil with their first-round pick, then they could move Johnson inside or shift him over to right tackle, which would free up Phil Loadholt to possibly play one of these spots. They signed Josh Schwartz, who was a starter with the Carolina Panthers. Whether or not this becomes a major need after the draft all boils down to their plan for Johnson.

5. Safety

Jarrad Page retired and Tyrell Johnson signed with the Dolphins. I think Minnesota will start Mistral Raymond at one of the two safety spots, but the other spot is still clearly up for grabs. The safety class this year is clearly lacking in depth, so look for the Vikings to address this need via free agency.
