What You Should Know About Diabetic Foot Ulcers

June 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 202

Diabetic foot ulcers are known to be the most common foot injury a person can get and can lead to amputation. There are certain risk factors with diabetic foot ulcers such as: structural foot deformity, diabetic neuropathy and peripheral arterial occlusive disease. However, with a careful examination from a physician, testing to neuropathy and arterial insufficiency, diabetic foot ulcers can be prevented. Of course, involvement from the patient with good foot hygiene, comfortable footwear and taking care of the nails on their feet, will certainly help prevent the formation of feet ulcers.

The best preventative measure against having ulcers is having one's feet examined regularly by a podiatrist or family physician. There are certain risk factors for having one's foot amputated and they are: arterial insufficiency, limited joint mobility, being obese, poor vision, poor glucose control, improper footwear and a history of foot problems.

Prevention of these ulcers can also be helped by gently washing one's feet every day with soap and water and then putting on a moisturizer. This will help keep one's feet health and may also help prevent injury and deterioration of the skin and foot. One's doctor should also check their patient's shoes to see if he or she has the right support or fit. Custom shoes can also be quite helpful especially for those who have deformities or other foot concerns. Those who have diabetes and have foot concerns should also be careful of infections, blisters, scrapes and cuts. These conditions can occur with home remedies that are infective. If there are minor wounds to the feet, they can be helped with gentle cleansing with a topical antibiotic.

For some diabetic patients, no matter how careful they are with their feet, foot ulcers can occur. When foot ulcers occur, there are certain treatment methods that can help such as debridement. Debridement is when removal of all tissue and other foreign bodies are taken off. Proper debridement is necessary and it is also important that once the debridement is over, the wound should be irrigated with saline or cleanser, and a dressing should be applied.

Another thing that helps a person who has diabetic foot ulcers is to use a wheelchair or crutches. This helps the healing process of a diabetic foot ulcer because it reduces the pressure on the wounds. Some physicians feel that putting on a removable cast walker works best because it allows a daily wound inspection, is easy when changing the dressing of the wound and helps to detect infection at an early stage. Wedge shoes and postoperative shoes also work well because they are large enough for the bulky dressings.

To conclude, many feel that treatment for diabetic foot ulcers should include, "debridement, offloading and infection control." Doctors don't need to know the specifics in treating foot ulcers; however, it is important to to be able to evaluate this health concern after an evaluation and to refer the patient to someone more knowledgeable and to follow up with the patient on how to heal the wound.
