Think of Your Feet First

June 21, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 186

Isn't it time you got smart and paid attention to the hardest working part of your body - the foot! The foot is the most dynamic structure we have. It works in concert with the rest of the body and is our most effective physical contact with the environment. There are 206 bones in the human body. A quarter of those are in the feet - 26 bones in each foot. There are also fine bundles of nerves in the feet that help the feet make those subtle movements that enable us to keep our balance and assist in walking and running.

Since our feet are such an important feature of our mobility and our day-to-day interaction with our world, it is essential that we treat them with care. Maybe give them more attention. When your feet are comfortable, you are comfortable. You are able to go out and do the job and the thinking that goes with it without being hampered with foot pain.

My job has been teaching for 36 years and that amounts to a lot of walking and standing. I have been bothered for a long time with painful calluses on the balls of my feet. This caused walking and consequently teaching to be very uncomfortable. One day as I was looking through a shoe catalogue I noticed a shoe with "negative heel technology". With this shoe your heel is slightly lower than your toes with a gentle incline of 3.7 degrees and it supports a natural walking motion. It takes pressure off the ball of the foot. I tried the shoe and was just amazed. My feet stopped hurting. I even had more energy because it improved my posture and promoted better respiration. This was a great way to take care of my feet and even my body. When your feet are properly aligned it affects the rest of your physical system.

Since my experience with the "negative heel technology" I have become aware of other new technologies. There is one called "fitflop microwobbleboard technology."

We are familiar with the flipflop that does not have much support at all. This "flop" has a sole with 3 areas of support. There is mid-density material in the toe cap to help maintain speed and increase stability. Then in the midsection there is low-density material. It creates instability which causes the muscles in the lower leg to work harder. The heel is high-density material so it can absorb more of the shock of the foot hitting the ground.

There is really no excuse for not having a shoe with good support and giving your feet the time of their life. We are in the information age and advances in science and health are happening at a very rapid pace. Just let your feet and body take advantage of them.
