The Causes and Treatments for Heel Pain

June 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 177

It is difficult when part of the foot hurts because when the foot isn't properly functioning, getting around gets difficult, sometimes almost impossible. Upright, the foot bears all the weight of a person and prolonged standing or activities related to the foot can lead to pain in the heel.

Heel pain does not just appear instantly. The foot is made to support the body weight, but when abused with strenuous activities, can manifest discomfort and pain.

Causes of Heel Pain

There are many causes of heel pain, most of which are activities which directly impact the foot. Often, heel pain manifests when the foot can no longer take the pressure of the activities it does. Some of the main causes are:

  • Prolonged standing especially when wearing heels. The arch of the foot can get stressed out when balancing and this can lead to plantar fasciitis. This is the most common cause of heel pain and happens when the tissue forming the arch of the foot gets swollen.
  • Obesity can also cause heel pain especially if the person moves around a lot and does not practice correct stance and walking. The impact of every step can add to the stress the foot receives especially because the person is heavy.
  • Heel spurs are bony growths on the underside of the heel bone and are commonly associated with long-term plantar fasciitis. These can also result from jogging and excessive running, wrong fitting shoes or non-supportive footwear, and obesity.

Treatments for Heel Pain

Treatments may range from surgical to non-surgical treatments, covering those minimally invasive ones like injections of anti-inflammatory medication to reduce pain and swelling. Podiatrists will examine the area and may perform x-rays to properly diagnose a person's condition.

Usually, orthotic devices like shoe inserts or traps and straps are used to correct the foot posture and help improve mobility and functionality. These devices support the foot and help a person maintain his feet in good shape.

Surgical treatments are done only in extreme cases where the plantar fascia needs to be released, or when heel spurs need to be removed.

How to Prevent Heel Pain

Wearing proper shoes for different activities can greatly help in preventing heel pain. If shoes a bit too tight or too loose, find a pair that fits better to reduce the stress the foot has when trying to walk well in the wrongly fitting shoes. For obese people, losing weight can help alleviate the risks of heel pain.

Always consider enough rest and nutrition to take proper care of not just the feet, but the body as well.
