How to Get Your Feet Ready For Summer Sandals Without Paying Salon Prices

April 19, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 89

Despite seeing our feet every day, when it's time to don summer sandals, it is always a bit of a shock to see our pasty winter feet in the cold (or should that be warm?) light of day. Although it is lovely to get a professional pedicure, it can be expensive and not everyone can spare the time, so here is a guide to doing it yourself in the comfort of your own home.

Soaking your feet is essential, not only will the soak clean your feet but it will also ready them for exfoliation by softening the dead skin cells. Take off any nail polish and fill a bowl or tub with warm water and find a comfy place to sit. You can add some essential oils such as tea tree, a well known antibacterial, or perhaps peppermint oil, witch hazel or Epsom salts. Soak for as long as you like but for at least ten minutes to soften up any callused, hard skin.

To scrub in preparation of removing dead skin you can use a shop bought foot scrub, but sea salt granules or even course sugar will also do the job just as well. Massage the whole of your foot starting at the heel and continue all the way down to your toes, rinse off and now it's time to tackle the hard skin.

Buffing tools are available from health care shops or pharmacies, pumice stones, lava rocks or those ones that look a little like a cheese grater are all suitable. Use a little body wash with these and scrape in a backward and forward motion concentrating on any callused areas like back of the heels and ball of the foot. However, be gentle and don't overdo it - you don't want to rub your feet raw!

Then trim your nails with a steel clipper made especially for toe nails, clip right across in a straight line and smooth out the edges with a nail file leaving slightly rounded corners which will help to prevent in-growing toenails. Now it's time to moisturise and massage using either a specially formulated foot cream or if you haven't got any just use your favourite body lotion. Use a circular motion and include your ankles and calves, when you reach the underside of your feet knead the arches gently using the knuckle of your index finger, which will relax you and boost circulation.

Next, apply your favourite nail polish but remember to use a clear basecoat first, this will protect your nails from staining and should also strengthen them. So now, put on your best sandals because after a winter of hiding inside shoes and boots, your feet are ready to face the world!
