Your big toe is your main stabilizer when you walk or run and both of these can be affected if you are continually suffering from pain in this area.

As long as you have had it confirmed by a doctor that there is no serious underlying condition, most of the time big toe pain can be treated by yourself.

Toe Pain Can Be Treated At Home

Common toe problems where pain is a symptom are usually caused from something trivial such as wearing tight shoes; however, bunions arthritis or injury can also be causes. Pain relief can usually be provided by yourself within your own home using a variety of methods, including exercises and massage.

Shoes May Be The Problem

One of the most common causes of non-serious big toe pain is wearing shoes which are too tight. You should avoid shoes that squash the toes together such as high heels. There are many lightweight shoes that offer both comfort and arch support. Always buy shoes that are half a size larger than your feet to avoid crowding of the toes.

If toe pain is persistent, you can try a pair of specially made orthotics. These shoes can usually only be given by a podiatrist who has done a full examination of your feet and toes. These shoes often put a stop to chronic toe pain.

Exercise For Pain Relief

Toe exercises are a great way to relieve pain and increase the motion of the toe. Place a tin of something inside a sock and tie it up at the top. Place the sock in the middle of the big toe and second toe and grip the sock tightly. Place your heel on a stool and slowly lift the can using only your toes. You should aim to do this exercise every day.

Massaging The Toe

Massaging is great for relieving big toe pain. There are many different techniques that you can apply and all seem to help. Try searching on the internet for the best toe massaging techniques and then aim to do these every day.

Use Heat And Ice

You can relieve big toe pain by applying either heat or ice to the toe. It is important however, to know when to use each one. If you toe has become swollen, then ice should be applied to reduce the swelling and push toxins away from the affected area. Apply ice up to 4 times per day.

If the toe is aching and you are also experiencing stiffness, using heat will increase blood circulation and relieve the pain. Again use this technique up to 4 times per day.

Now you can try some of the above options in the comfort of your own home and hopefully the pain will go away. Remember, that if the pain does not subside, return to your doctor for your toe to be checked again.
