The Many Facets and Advantages of a Farmers's Market

April 04, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 88

This year I am snow birding on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. Many of the houses on the shoreline are rented to people spending their winter vacations, far from snow and cold, on the beautiful beaches of Hawaii. The North Shore area is divided into smaller villages and I am in Waialua where the sugar mill still stands although not currently functioning as a sugar mill. I am not renting but staying with my daughter in a small house on the beach. The beach is lined with private homes and rentals and is a very pristine location.

Much of the land is under cultivation and produces food crops that are sold to restaurants and local consumers. The asparagus field across the road has gone to seed but it was interesting watching the cutting process every morning before the day warmed up. The workers carried small plastic baskets and hand cut the asparagus using rubber bands to hold each bunch together. Other fields used machinery to harvest the crops. There are two farmer's markets and the one in Waialua is located at the sugar mill and open on Wednesdays and Saturdays. This market is basically fruits and vegetables.

The Sunday market is a full blown market and many tourists browse through the stands. This market is located in Hale'iwa where surfing is popular. My daughter and I spend Sunday morning enjoying the ambiance of the people and shops. We buy our vegetables and fruits from the farmers and purchase coffee and breakfast from the various food and drink venders. Many of the venders demonstrate creative arts such as woodcarving, basket weaving, making giant crepes, frying pasteles, giving massages, etc. One of our favorite is the booth that sells grass-fed beef, eggs, and range-fed chickens. The beef is very good and the ground beef can be purchased with very little fat content. There is a dairy that sells gourmet butter with various additives. I like the sea salt butter and my daughter likes the honey butter. They also make cheese spreads and buttermilk is sold as a by- product. I purchase flavored sea salt to add to my dishes as I am the cook when I stay with my daughter and like experimenting with flavors and the salt booth has a vast array to select from. The diversity of this market is amazing.

Meeting and greeting acquaintances and friends old and new makes the morning experience even more of an event. Of course I always buy more than we need but the prices for fruits and vegetables are very reasonable. I often wish more local fresh produce markets were available in the smaller U.S. towns I frequent during the year. There is something about procuring from a farmer that makes the produce seem fresher.
